She was born in Wilmington, NC, the daughter of the late Alfred Levi Carter and Vivian Leola Farrow Carter. Also remembered is her husband, Francis D. Gemmill, who also preceded her in death.
During the war Vivian volunteered as a plane spotter. After work at the Coastline she (and a coworker/best friend) would walk to the Cape Fear Hotel and spend the evening watching for planes. In telling these stories later she was asked what kind of planes she saw she would just laugh and say she only had to spot them, not identify!
In 1945 Vivian was crowned Miss USO Winter Queen.
Besides being the best mother, grandmother, great-grandmother she was a wonderful cook and enjoyed nothing more than sharing her gift with others. Another passion was flower arranging. She could never have enough flowers and loved to decorate.
Mrs. Gemmill was a member of Basilica Shrine of St. Mary. She was also a member of the Pink Lady Auxiliary at NHRMC, member of the Garden Council of New Hanover County, the Tidewater Camellia Club, Green Thumb Garden Club and the Cape Fear Garden Club.
Surviving are four children, Fran G. Pavlo and husband Michael of Leland, NC, Beth G. Henderson and husband Gary of Hampstead, NC, David D. Gemmill and wife Stephanie of Frenchtown, NJ, and Mary Anne G. Hepburn and husband Doug of North Pole, AK; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Patricia Dudginski of Wilmington, NC.
