William Wells McMahon

William Wells McMahon, 82, of Leland, died peacefully surrounded by his family Tuesday, December 4, 2018, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Bill was born in Houlton, Maine on May 5, 1936, to the late Dorothy Wells and Reverend Dwight Harris McMahon. He grew up in Maine and then graduated from Berwick High in Berwick, Maine, and then went to Tufts University in Sommerville, Massachusetts graduating with a BSME in 1960. Bill was on a work-study program with General Electric and worked at many Facilities of GE throughout the USA.

After the Training Program was over, his first assignment was in Evendale, Ohio where he met his wife of 55 years, Barbara. They were married in 1963 and lived in Cincinnati for 8 years. He took a management position in Wilmington in 1971. He retired after 42 years in 1997. During his last few years with GE he traveled to Japan often.

Bill loved life, he enjoyed traveling, reading, walking and playing cards. He was fun to be around and as sick as he was he made the staff at NHRMC laugh.

He is terribly missed, but will always remain in our hearts.

Bill is survived by his wife, Barbara Walsh; son, William M (Leigh Anne), daughter, Kathleen Stierwalt (Jason), and son, Robert F. (Alicia); grandchildren, Michael McMahon, Jordan Stierwalt, and James, Elijah, Nehemiah, Zion, Malachi, and Joseph McMahon; many cousins, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and a host of wonderful friends. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Albert Walsh, and his brothers-in-law, James, Al, and Robert Walsh, and Paul Heidel.

Reverend John McGee, OSFS will celebrate a Funeral Liturgy at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 6650 Carolina Beach Road, on Thursday, January 3, 2019, at 10:00 am. You may greet the family during the hour prior to the service.
