Howard Eugene Herndon

Howard Eugene Herndon, a resident of Durham, NC passed away unexpectedly on January 8th 2023. He is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Honeycutt (Herndon), son-in-law Brandon Honeycutt, son Matthew Herndon, daughter-in-law Rachel Herndon, grandchildren Nash and Mila Herndon, and former spouse and life-long friend, Deborah Thigpen Herndon.

He is preceded in death by mother Marie T. Herndon and father, Howard Herndon.

Howard was born in Charleston, SC on October 8th, 1957. He served in the United States Air Force from 1977-1990, finishing his military career at England Air Force Base located in Alexandria, LA. He graduated from Chesterfield Marlboro Technical College with a degree in electrical engineering. He worked in the pharmaceutical industry for many years until retiring in 2011.

Despite his first name being Howard, he preferred to be called “Gene” and did not mind letting anyone know this. He had a huge passion for country, bluegrass, and gospel music. His favorite hobby was strumming on his Martin guitar and writing songs. He had a great sense of humor and loved to make others laugh. Howard was a kind, gentle soul that always wanted others to do right by one another and he made it known that he was a hugger and an emotional man. He had an endless archive of movie, television, and musical trivia. His favorite musician was Merle Haggard. He also loved eating ice cream and tigers were his favorite animal.
