Shirley Lucas Edwards

Courtland, VA: Shirley Grace Lucas Edwards, age 86, of Courtland, VA died Friday, August 18, 2023 at her home. She was a daughter of the late John Brantley Lucas and Lena Crowder Lucas and was also predeceased by her husband Carl Maxion Edwards, three sisters; Mary Lucas, Mrs. Rose, Mrs. Pridgen and five brothers; Huland, Charles, Jimmy, Jesse and Edward Lucas.

On Friday night this sweet lady, my mom left us. She fought extremely hard the last 3 years. It all started with a broken shoulder, then a broken knee, with a broken hip somewhere in the mix, there came a Broken pelvis. The knee and hip were replaced. Also with 3 stints installed in her legs she was on the mend. However about 4 months in on her return home from rehab she was told that she had lung cancer. She fought that to but her body was way to weak and gave up Friday at about 7:48.

Left to cherish her memory is her sons; Carl M. “Mac” Edwards, Jr of Courtland, VA and David Samuel “Sam” Edwards and wife Rebecca of Freemont, her daughter, Carla Ann Edwards Watkins and husband Glenn of Williamsburg, VA, grandchildren; Heather Grimes, Misty Edwards, Mitchell Watkins (Marie), Megan Royster (Jonathan) and Katherine Watkins, great grandchildren; Reece Sutton, Shelby Grimes and Maddie Grimes and a special thank you to her loving caregiver Vanessa Jones.

A visitation for Shirley will be held Wednesday, August 23, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Thomas - Yelverton Funeral Home, 2704 Nash St N, Wilson, North Carolina 27896. Following the visitation will be a graveside service at 1:00 PM at Maplewood Cemetery, 400 College St, Wilson, North Carolina 27893.
