It is with broken hearts we announce the unexpected passing of our dear mother, grandmother, and friend, Debra Carol Blackbird. Now reunited in the spirit world with her children Paul Blackbird and Tawnya Blackbird, and her parents Burlington and Inez Blackbird.
Debra is survived by her children Ryan Blackbird (Colleen) and Nikiyah Blackbird.
Cherished Grandmother to Ryan Jr., Ryleen, Mercedes, Channing, Raven, Maya, Kyleen, Alicia, Aaron “Ross”, Amelia “Calian”, Abigail, Moriyah, Isaac, Caleb, Lidiyah, Elijah, Hannah, Zionnah, Neveah, and Havalah. Beloved Great Grandmother to Ocean, Daisy, Sophia, Emery, and Lakelyn. Beloved Partner and best friend to John Derocher. Sister to the late Kathy Blackbird, Denise Whiteye, and Keith Blackbird.
Debra will be forever cherished by her many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Debra was a deeply kind and spiritual woman who carried love for everyone she met. She had a way of making people feel welcome, cared for, and seen. To many, she was more than a mother — she was someone you could turn to, someone who would help however she could, even if it meant giving her last.
Life was not always easy for Debra, but the hardships she faced never changed the goodness in her heart. If anything, they made her more compassionate and understanding toward others.
Through her spiritual journey, Debra became a traditional Pipe Carrier, honouring the sacred teachings and ceremonies passed down from those who came before her. This role meant a great deal to her, and she carried it with humility and deep respect for her culture. She loved being surrounded by people — visiting with family and friends, sharing laughter, singing, dancing, and of course heading out to enjoy a good game of bingo.
Debra will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her generosity, and the love she shared so freely with everyone who knew her.
