Elsie Lorraine Bishop (nee Green) was born to Thomas Russell Green and Gertrude Harriet (Earl) Green, on June 23, 1929 in the city of Owen Sound Ontario. She had 7 sisters and 7 brothers. She passed away on April 4, 2021 at home in her 91st year.

Elsie met her husband on the steps of the old BME Church in Windsor. They were married on June 29th, 1949 and Fred passed away on October 20th, 1998.

Celebrating her life and home going are her children: Ross, wife Judy; Harvey, wife Cathy; Nancy; Frederick (Rick); Denise, husband Wade Earle; William (Bill); Carol, husband Kevin Ellsworth; John; and Lesa, husband Lorenzo Walker. Predeceased by Dennis (1953) and Paul (2016). She is survived by 18 grandchildren (predeceased by 1), 15 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by 2 sisters, Doris Green and Sally Houston, 1 brother George, wife Carol, sister-in-law Lois Green, brother-in-law Marvin Bishop, partner Robert and special friend Herbert Burnett.

Elsie attended Stratford Normal School where she achieved her teaching degree and taught at Owen Sound Collegiate and Vocational Institute (OSCVI). Elsie was very artistic and expressed her talent through ceramics, knitting and painting. She found joy in reading with students from the local elementary schools. She was a champion dart player at the local Legion 157 and an honorary member. Elsie was a philanthropist and strongly supported the Hour Day Study Club, NorthStar Cultural Community Centre, Samaritans Purse, Kidney Foundation, only to name a few. She was also the secretary of The Crescendo Club, president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the North American Black Historical Museum and an activist for the black community.

At the age of 70 she acquired her driver’s license for the first time, and she never looked back. But her greatest love was for the BME Church, where she served as the treasurer, usher and secretary of the Church Aid Society.

The greatest attributes of Elsie, our mother, was that she was strong, courageous, fearless, and resilient. Some took her gentle quietness for weakness, but it was her greatest strength. She smiled in the face of adversity and endured pain and suffering with grace. Rev. Thomas and Pastor Talbot remarked on her smile, beautiful countenance, and gentle spirit, and said she was truly and angel from Jesus.

Rest in peace gentle spirit, until we meet again...

I had the pleasure in August to spend a day with my Aunt Elsie. She had called me wanting to visit her younger sister Doris who is in a Nursing Home. A short visit was had with lots of smiles and sister love. How could we know this would be the last time they would see each other. I was truly blessed to witness this and have no regrets.
I will cherish all the memories we shared and the crazy stories my Mom her sister Gwen had told me that only bring a smile.
My sincere condolences go out to my cousins unfortunately Covid keeps us apart but know we are with you in spirit.

Rest In Peace Aunt Elsie you will forever be in our hearts
Love Your Nieces Sibyl & Anngellica Lendore
