Janet was born on March 26, 1948, to George and Janet (Smith) Benest in Windsor, Ontario. She was raised with her siblings Lillias (Betty), Georgina, Anne, and Ian and she was preceded in death by her parents and siblings.
Janet is survived by her children, Debra and Dennis (Kim Segal), grandchildren Gerry (Amanda), Jacob, Alma, and Kye, great-grandchildren Camryn and Ainsley, and many extended family in Canada and Scotland.
After 37 years of service she retired from Hiram Walker, where she held many roles over the years and was a proud member of Unifor Local 2027.
Janet loved books, baking, her Montreal Canadiens, family game nights, and bingo. Bingo dabbers were permanent residents in her purse, ready whenever opportunity called. Her competitive side was familiar to anyone who ever sat across from her during a card or board game. She found happiness in simple pleasures: brunch and bingo, a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos, a good movie or game on TV, and her cat nearby. Janet didn't require elaborate plans to enjoy herself. She simply enjoyed life. Family made those ordinary pleasures even better. In her later years, she treasured the time she could spend with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A trip to Calgary in June to visit Gerry, Amanda, Camryn, and Ainsley was particularly meaningful to her.
Janet leaves behind a family who knew they were loved, and the example of a woman who understood that some of life's best moments weren't particularly complicated at all.
She will be remembered for her generous spirit, kind heart, and wonderful sense of humor. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Family and friends are invited to gather at Anderson Funeral Home on Friday, October 2, from 6–9 p.m., and Saturday, October 3, from 11–12 p.m. A funeral service celebrating Janet's life will be held at 12 p.m.
The family is deeply grateful to the compassionate staff on the 4th floor of the Windsor Regional Hospital - Ouellette Campus for making Janet’s final days peaceful and comfortable.
