Alan Douglas Holl

28 June, 1942 – 10 November, 2025
IN THE CARE OF

Thomson In The Park Funeral Home and Cemetery

Always In Our Hearts

Alan grew up in Winnipeg, where he attended River Heights and Kelvin schools. He later graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, and after exploring several career paths discovered his true calling in education. In 1974 he embraced that vocation, beginning what would become a long and meaningful career as a teacher.

Alan taught in the (Fort Garry) Pembina Trails School Division at both the elementary and junior high levels. Generations of students fondly remember his enthusiasm—especially his unforgettable rocket-launching activities—while colleagues recall his dedication through his work on the local MTS committee. After 31 years in the classroom, Alan retired from teaching but continued to give back to the profession. He spent another 19 years as a Teacher Supervisor at both the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg, proudly mentoring more than 300 teacher candidates. Guiding new educators brought him great satisfaction and remained one of the highlights of his career.

One of Alan’s greatest joys later in life was being a grandfather. He had a warm, gentle, and deeply affectionate way about him, and his grandchildren absolutely loved his big, comforting hugs. Whether he was reading, playing, or simply sitting nearby enjoying their company, he adored them and cherished every moment they shared.

At home and among family and friends, Alan was known as the dependable handyman who could build, wire, paint, plaster, or repair almost anything. Whether fixing a drippy tap or finding a creative way to salvage an old household item, he delighted in the challenge of repair over replacement. His favourite television shows were, unsurprisingly, those centered on home renovation and repairs.

Alan cherished simple routines: his morning coffee accompanied by the daily papers, a crossword puzzle, or a good book. He took pride in having driven with his family and tent trailer all the way from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, to Tofino, British Columbia—introducing them to the wonders of Canada’s vast and beautiful landscape.

Some of his happiest memories were made camping at the family lot on Pelican Lake, where he spent countless peaceful hours outdoors, soaking in the scenery and enjoying a quiet read. He treasured his many years of “boys’ weekends” with close friends – including his breakfast club crew - moments filled with camaraderie, laughter, and tradition.

Alan was also fortunate to travel beyond Canada, visiting Europe, Brazil, and Australia. Closer to home, cycling became one of his favourite three-season pursuits, and he and Ann covered great distances together throughout the city. He continued to enjoy cycling well into this past August.

Alan’s life was marked by curiosity, dedication, and a deep appreciation for both people and place. His steady presence, practical wisdom, and gentle humour will be remembered with love by all who knew him.

Alan was so impressed by the professional, empathetic care of all the medical personnel who attended to him through his brief cancer journey. The services he received through the Palliative Care Program and MAiD were more than exceptional. On his behalf, the family would like to profoundly thank each one involved in his care.
