It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Alice Mau Tan Au on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at the Grace Hospital. Alice will be remembered and missed as a loving and caring mother to Larry (Alison), Pak (Lisa), Nelson (Liberty), Cindy (Steve) and grandmother to nine grandchildren - Zachary, Sarah, Kiana, Chett, Tristan, Kailan, Rowan, Ethan & Lydia. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Shui Chun and parents, Chan Chi Leung & Chu Suk Lin. Alice is survived by her younger brother, Chan Hon Kit and sister, Juliana (Joe) Cheung, with nieces Rowena, Dora, Barbara & Jana Chan back in Hong Kong and Grace (Alex) & Candice (Daniel) Cheung in California, she also leaves behind a brother-in-law, sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews on the “Au” side of the family.
Alice was born on September 12, 1940, in the Canton Province in China and at the age of five or six, she moved to Hanoi, Vietnam after the Japanese occupation of China. She left school after grade nine to help care for and raise her younger sister Juliana, whom she adored, while her parents ran the family business. In 1957, her family fled Vietnam and settled in Macau for a year until they got approval back into Hong Kong. Alice married our father in 1965 and in 1973, made the sacrifice of leaving her parents, younger brother, and sister, to come to Canada for a better life and opportunity for her children. The family spent the first six years in Killarney, Manitoba until we moved to Winnipeg in 1979 where she worked in the garment industry until 2004. After dad passed away in 2013, mom moved into a senior’s condo until she had a stroke three years ago that paralyzed her left side and left her in a wheelchair. Alice spent the last three years at West Park Manor personal care home until her unfortunate passing. Our family would like to give our thanks and gratitude to all the staff at West Park Manor for the dedicated care they gave to our mother.
We will miss the unconditional love, support, and generosity that she has given us throughout our lives. Mom cared the most for her children and grandchildren and had a very special bond with her sister Juliana in San Francisco. She will be forever remembered in our thoughts and hearts. May you rest in peace our dear mother…
A memorial service for Alice will be held at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway on Friday, February 4, 2022, at 10:00 am followed by a family burial service at Brookside Cemetery.
