With broken hearts we announce the passing of our beautiful Mom, Gramma and Great-Gramma, Alice Muir, on October 19, 2024 at 95 years of age.
Alice was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence “Laurie” Muir in 1982 and by two sons, Ken and Keith in 2015.
Alice is survived by her son Doug (Anne), Ian (Nicole), Karen, (predeceased by Barry Hartley in 2023), grandchildren, Erin, David, Matthew, Megan, Johnathon, Zachary, Leah, Jennifer, Alyssa, Michael, Kyle and Hailey, as well as many great-grandchildren.
Alice grew up in St. Vital with her parents Bill and Alice Grant and her three brothers, Jim, Dave and Jack. After graduating from Glenlawn Collegiate in 1947, she secured her first job just two weeks later at Fisher and Burpe Surgical Supplies as an office clerk in the accounts department. It was here that she met the love of her life, Laurie, who was the manager of the shipping department. They were married on September 3, 1949. They enjoyed 33 years of marriage that was filled with love, music, sports and laughter. Although Dad passed away suddenly on their dream trip to Scotland, her love for him never died.
Alice’s favourite times were spent with family – especially at our first family cabin at Victoria Beach and then at our aptly named cabin, The Squeezemore Inn, at Lake of the Woods. The cottage legacy is strength of family and joy. Many years of memories have been built because of Mom and Dad’s dream to have a place to gather.
Music was a large part of our family time. Sing songs at the lake with Doug playing guitar and every generation lifting their voices up together brought her the most joy. She would sing little songs to the grandkids while rocking them on her lap. The favourite being “Bushel and a Peck”. It has become our family anthem.
Alice was best known for her sense of humour and quick wit. She could find humour in most situations and in a few words would bring a whole room to laughter – sometimes just with her facial expression. She was kind and giving to all. She always had a basket of hand-made mittens ready for grandkids or donation. We all lived for her baking. Cookies, Welsh Cakes, Scottish pancakes were always available in the plenty and ready for visits with family and friends. Egg salad sandwiches were her “specialty”. Many of her favourite recipes are now being made by the next generations. We all agree that she would leave out the secret ingredient from her recipes as they can’t be replicated. Although, we think it was just her love sprinkled in that was the true secret.
Special thanks to the amazing staff at Meadowood Manor Personal Care Home. Your care of our Mom with true love and friendship during her time with you allowed her to pass peacefully and with dignity. That kindness will always bring us comfort, and appreciation from our family.
She will be truly missed by all who knew her. “Love you more”, Mom.
“When you love someone draw a circle around their name and not a heart, as a heart can be broken but a circle is eternal.”
Funeral Service to be held Saturday, April 26th, 2025 at 1:00 pm at Trinity United Church, 933 Summerside Ave.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cancercare Manitoba Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba.
