It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Alvin George Hook, age 92 years, at the Grace Hospital, Winnipeg on September 22, 2026.
He leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 62 years, Ethel, daughter Alexandra (Clarence), grandchildren Joel and Naomi (Abhishek), sister-in-law Judith Harrison, nephews Rob and Stewart, niece Frances Boddy (Kelly), great-nephew Shane, and close family and friends.
Alvin was born in Winnipeg and grew up in Elmwood. He attended Lord Selkirk School, and in 1956 graduated as a Civil Engineer from the University of Manitoba. He spent most of his career as an engineer with the Department of Highways, Province of Manitoba, retiring in 1993.
Alvin was a deeply private person whose main focus was family. He always supported us in our endeavours, comfortingly reassuring when we hit roadblocks and gently congratulatory when we succeeded. Right up to the end, he keenly followed his grandchildren’s journeys, proud of their milestones, intrigued by their paths, quietly cheering them on.
Alvin was known for his lifelong passion for photography, taking an early interest in black & white film including developing and printing. Over the years, this grew to include cameras from the 1800s and early 1900s, also practicing historical photographic processes and techniques.
Alvin and Ethel shared a love of travel, beginning with their Mexico honeymoon, several overseas trips exploring Britain and Europe, as well as spending many holidays in the Northwest Territories with Alex and her family.
Despite serious health challenges over the last 30 years, Alvin strove to live life to its fullest. A reader and observer by nature, his life was outwardly quiet but never still. He was a loyal friend, a staunch supporter, an unwavering father, grandfather and uncle, and a devoted husband. We are grateful for the many years we had him.
Heartfelt Thanks to family doctor Dr. David Breckman, oncologist Dr. Skrabek and her team, and the St. Boniface Hospital Cardiac/Pacemaker Centre.
Funeral service will take place at First Presbyterian Church, 61 Picardy Place, Winnipeg at 11am, October 3, 2026, Rev. Kevin MacDonald officiating.
