Andy (John Andrew) Miles

Andy passed away peacefully at Riverview Health Centre on May 26, 2022. He is survived by his loving wife Pat; his son Matthew (Christine) and granddaughter Audrey; his son Mark (Amanda) and granddaughters Maeve and Hazel; and his sister Mary (Cam) and niece Rebecca (Barry, Nicholas and Sophie). Andy was predeceased by his parents Audrey and Buck Miles and his brother Richard.

Andy will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, a nurturing and proud father, a delighted grandfather, a loyal friend, a good neighbour, and a conscientious employee. He lived by the values of respect for others, kindness, and humility.

Andy graduated from the University of Manitoba with a B.Sc. followed by a Master of Natural Resource Management. At University he also played for the University Bison hockey team. Andy's "hockey days" contributed to his professional development and application of team skills in later life. As Division Manager, Aboriginal (Indigenous) Relations with Manitoba Hydro he was responsible for and committed himself to developing meaningful, concrete partnerships with Northern and Indigenous communities and peoples.

Andy loved being with nature, living on the banks of the Red River, spending holiday time at West Hawk Lake, canoeing and kayaking throughout Manitoba and Ontario, taking "field trips" across northern Manitoba, skiing in Steamboat Springs CO and Silver Star BC and trekking through Scotland, Spain and Italy. Over a span of 15 years he canoed and kayaked the entirety of the voyageurs' route between Montreal and his home on the Red River, always accompanied by family or friends.

Andy was always grateful for the opportunities that came his way. He lived simply, enjoyed a healthy, balanced lifestyle, never missed a good meal, and treasured time spent with family and friends. He would wish us all to celebrate and care for our natural environment, to assist those needing a helping hand, and to be adventurous.

Andy's family would like to thank the staff at the Health Sciences Centre Emergency Department and the caring folks at Riverview Health Centre. If you wish to honour Andy's life, donations would be appreciated to FortWhyte Alive, United Way Winnipeg, or a charity of your choice.

A memorial service for Andy will take place at FortWhyte Alive at 6pm on Friday, June 10th.
