August 26, 1920 to November 9, 2017
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother, Audrey May Metcalfe (née Belknap), aged 97 years, on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg.
Audrey leaves to mourn and cherish her memory her three children: Robert Metcalfe, Valerie Metcalfe and Shelley Marshall, surrogate grandchild Helen Sabater-Fixe (Steven) and children, special family friend Irene Haigh Gidora, extended family and countless friends.
Audrey worked hard all her life and raised her children primarily on her own. She became the text book buyer for the University of Manitoba Bookstore and enjoyed working there for close to 24 years.
She lived in Vancouver and Thailand where she learned to teach English as a Second Language. She continued to teach ESL when she returned to Winnipeg in 1965.
Audrey loved to travel and realised her dream of going around the world. After she retired in 1986, she had countless adventures in Europe, the United States and Mexico.
We had a wonderful mother. She loved life and opened her heart to everyone she met. She made lifelong friends wherever she went. She was loving, brave, gracious, funny and feisty until the end.
Mom was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Sybil Belknap, her sister, Sybil Mallindine, and her beloved grandson Benjamin Marshall.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the attentive, loving care of the staff at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Convalescent Home at 276 Hugo Street N, Winnipeg, MB, R3M 2N6.
At her request our Mother has been cremated. A Memorial Service will be held in the Spring at a place and time to be determined.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life; and I will dwell in
the house of the Lord forever. (Psalm 23)
