Our Tatay and Lolo, Benigno Cahatol, left us to join his beloved Fe on their immortal adventure on 21 Dec, 2021. It is perhaps fitting that on the darkest day of a dark year Ben found the light of his life once
again.
Ben was born in Paete, Philippines. He became head of his family at age 16 following the death of his
father. He became an expert welder, and it was through work as a welder that he met the light of his
life, Fe. In a story fit for a Pixar romance they married, and in due time Fred and Claudia came along.
Hoping for a better future for the kids in Canada, Ben and Fe came over in 1975. They found a home in
Winnipeg’s young Filipino community. Many wonderful outings and evenings were spent with both the
St. Edwards and Filipino Seniors Dance Groups, the International Harvester family, and in the
inexhaustible and delightful company of the QPAM family.
Ben enjoyed his Teleserye, loved boxing, basketball, and watching golf; but he loved few things better
than a fine day of good fishing with his family. Especially with his grandchildren ! He also loved family
visits with the grandchildren, and nothing was better than Christmas with the whole family.
Ben is survived by his children Fred and Claudia (Hugh), grandchildren Sam, Amanda, Kristian, and
William. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and many grandnieces and grandnephews. Ben
was pre-deceased by his parents Sofia and Oligario, his beloved wife of nearly 60 years Fe, their
daughter Marites, his brothers and sisters Rosalia, Ponciano, Cesario, Ursula, Consorcia, and Juan -
promise kept.
Special thanks to the staffs of both Grace and St. Boniface Hospitals who looked after Tatay so well.
Special thanks are also offered to the Hemo staff at St. B.
