With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our Mum, Betty (Elizabeth-Anne) Turnbull, on Saturday March 6, 2021. Mum joins our Dad John, their infant daughter Susan, her parents Eva and Sigurd Dahl, in-laws John and Dorothy Turnbull, cousins Marie and Sam Fabro and Vic Patkau. She will be dearly missed by her son David (Jackie), daughter Nancy (Ralph), Cousin Lenore and family, and her close friends Ruth and Joanne.

Betty grew up in Elmwood, went to Lord Selkirk School and became a Nurse in 1957, graduating from the Grace. She married John in 1959 and raised their family in East Kildonan. Betty returned to Nursing in 1976 and worked part-time for VON for over 20 years. Betty enjoyed entertaining, hosting and organizing events. Throughout her life, she dedicated much time to volunteering for various charities and organizations, including the Middle Church Auxiliary, the St. Agnes Guild and Children’s Hospital Book Market.

Betty truly had full and wonderful life! She was very social and enjoyed her friendships through curling, ladies and mixed bridge clubs and sorority-Beta Sigma Phi. She especially enjoyed her summers at Falcon Lake and winter getaways to Palm Springs, California. She also loved to travel and went on many wonderful trips around the world.

Betty was blessed with many close friendships which she cherished deeply. We are forever grateful to Ruth, Joanne and Isobel for their continued visits and kindness over the past couple of years. We would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful staff on the 3rd floor at Beacon Hill Lodge for the excellent care and compassion given to our Mum over the past 5 years.

We are grateful for having such a wonderful Mum who supported and encourages us throughout our lives. We take comfort in knowing Mum is now at peace and will be reunited with her loved ones, including her beloved companions Holly, Angelina, Tia and Shawney, whom she loved dearly. Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty’s memory to Before the Bridge Senior K9 Rescue, a charity close to her heart.

A Butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam And for a brief moment, it’s glory and beauty Belong to our world But then it flies on again, and although we wish It could have stayed, We feel so lucky to have seen it…

SaiRam
I am sorry to learn about the passing away of Mrs Betty Turnbull.
I am based in Bangalore, India and my association with her was very brief and limited to just four emails I exchanged with her in January/ February this year. I was looking for someone who would be willing to publish riddles and stories I narrated to my 6 year old granddaughter in Fremont, CA in my daily Skype sessions with her during the pandemic. I contacted a number of publishers of children’s books in USA with my manuscript. While most publishers wanted 6-8 weeks for response, I was pleasantly surprised to receive a positive and encouraging response from her within 48 hours. Her warmth and friendliness literally oozed out of the few lines she wrote in reply. It is a different matter that the matter did not reach a positive conclusion as she wanted to put it out as an e- pamphlet while I , being a first time author, wanted to see my work as an illustrated colourful book. But I never felt bad even she expressed regret at not accepting my proposal and in fact thanked her for her prompt and encouraging response. A couple of weeks later, one publisher In Bangalore showed interest and the book will be published by end April, 2021. I wanted to send a complimentary copy to her as she made me feel good about my manuscript.

My heartfelt condolences to all her kith and kin . May her heavenly soul rest in eternal peace.

Betty and my mother (Norma Kaisaris) were good friends. They travelled together, volunteered together, played bridge and socialized together and lived in the same condo community. As a family we took a cruise almost 20 years ago, Betty came with my Mother and we had a great time with her and she was like a second grandmother to our kids. She was a kind, giving, engaging lady and we are so saddened to hear of her passing. Our sincere condolences to her family.

Condolences to Betty’s family. I have fond memories of our days in Beta Sigma Phi and social gatherings at the home of Bob and Mickey Smith.
