Denise Cecile Rivard, aged 88, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away peacefully at Jocelyne House Hospice. Her departure, though marked by sadness, is a testament to a life well-lived and a legacy enriched by love and kindness. Denise is survived by her brother, Gerard Rivard, the last of her siblings, outliving Claire, Oliva, and Geraldine.
Born on October 13, 1936, in St. Eustache, Denise was raised on a farm, where the values of hard work and community were instilled in her from a young age. Alongside her siblings, she contributed to the family farm and enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, such as dancing at Lido Plage. Her early experiences on the farm nurtured a creativity and resourcefulness that would characterize her life.
At the age of 17, Denise relocated to Winnipeg to pursue her career, becoming actively involved in not-for-profit organizations that sought to enrich the Francophone community. Her roles with the Société Franco-manitobaine and the Centre Culturel franco-manitobain were not just jobs; they were vocations that reflected her commitment to her cultural heritage and her community’s vibrancy. Denise’s career also included administrative work in education and years of volunteering with the RCMP post-retirement, demonstrating her enduring desire to serve and uplift those around her.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Denise was a remarkable artisan. Her talents in crafting, painting, and sewing brought beauty into the lives of her family and friends. She meticulously created everything from clothing for her daughters to home decor, exemplifying a blend of practicality and artistic flair. The cherished memories of crafting with her best friend, Terri, and attending fairs to share their wares highlight the joy and connection that defined her relationships.
Denise’s life journey took her to Duncan, British Columbia, where she lived for 25 years. Despite the geographical distance, she maintained strong family ties through weekly phone calls and shared visits with her loved ones. Her ability to nurture relationships was a hallmark of her character, reinforcing bonds that spanned across provinces.
In her personal life, Denise was fortunate to be loved deeply by two wonderful men: Ceredig Richards, her husband for 25 years, and Terrence Duddridge, a cherished companion she met and fell in love whom she met through a prayer group. The love and support from these partnerships enriched her life narrative, providing companionship and joy.
Denise faced the challenge of illness with the same strength and resilience she displayed throughout her life. Diagnosed with stage 4 cancer following the loss of Terrence in August 2024, she approached her final months with a spirit filled with grace and gratitude.
Denise’s life was a tapestry woven with love, support, and unwavering devotion. Her presence will be profoundly missed, but her legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched. Mom left behind not just a family, but a community enriched by her spirit, memories, and profound love.
We would like to sincerely thank the staff at Riverview Health Centre and the incredible staff at Jocelyn House for taking such good care of mom during her illness. Those of you who may want to help could make a donation to Jocelyne House as they are by far an excellent service for those who are dying.
We would also like to thank the Duddridge family … it was great to see your dad and our mom so happy together. Thank you for sharing your dad with us and for allowing us to also become family. We are so blessed.
Chère maman, you will be missed and forever remembered. Your journey on earth may have ended, but your love and lessons will continue to guide us through the beauty of life.
The family invites those attending to join them for a lunch reception following the service.
God Bless
