Diana and Elvin Kathler

January 13, 1942 – March 24, 1997

Peacefully, at the Victoria General Hospital, Diana, age 55 years, went home to be with her Lord.

Diana will be lovingly remembered by her son David and mother Mary Barker of Winnipeg; her twin brother Dennis (Jo); her niece Robynne (Gordon), Martin and nephew Jonathan of Gilliam, Manitoba; one sister-in-law Katherine Bergen and seven brothers-in-law Peter (Elly), Bill (Beth), Fred (Susan), Walter (Kathy), John (Eleanor) and Art (Margaret); numerous nieces, nephews, relative and dear friends. She was predeceased by her husband Elvin in January 1996 and her father Harry in February 1984.

Diana was raised and educated in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She began working for Manitoba Telephone System when she was 17 years old after which she was employed with Zellers and Shoppers Drug Mart in a security position. Before retiring at age 54, she was a dental receptionist for Dr. Bronstein.

Visitation took place on Friday, March 28 between 7:00 pm and 8:30 pm at Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1501 Waverley Street. Funeral service celebrating her life was held on Saturday, March 29 at 11:00 am at Immanuel Pentecostal Church, 955 Wilkes Avenue with Rev. John Howson officiating. Interment followed at Waverley Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Diana’s nephews.

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

ELVIN ERNST KATHLER

In the arms of his wife Diana, on Wednesday, January 24, 1996 at the Victoria General Hospital, Elvin went home to be with his Lord, aged 55 years, of Winnipeg, MB.

Elvin was born on May 14, 1940. He grew up on the farm near Arnaud, where he attended school and upon graduation went to work for a bank in the city at a branch office in Lethbridge. He then started with Canadian Indemnity in Winnipeg and over the years travelled to their branch offices. Later he established his own insurance claims company which was very successful. His lifetime dream of having a cottage became a reality. It was a beautiful spot on flowing river where he spent many quiet summer days and weekends with his family, relaxing and enjoying God’s creation.

Remaining to cherish Elvin’s memory are his dear wife Diana; son David and his mother-in-law Mary Barker; one sister Katherine Bergen and seven brothers; Peter (Elly), Bill (Beth), Fred(Susan), Walter (Kathy), Rudy (Kay), John (Eleanor) and Art (Margaret); brother-in-law Dennis (Josephine) as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by parents, Wilhelm and Amalia; by two sisters Annie and Mary; and by his father-in-law Harry Barker.

Elvin’s funeral service celebrating his life was held on Saturday, January 27, 1996 at Immanuel Pentecostal Church, with Rev. Arnold Petrauskas officiating. Interment followed at Waverley Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Elvin’s nephews.

For those who wish, visitation will be held on Friday, January 26 between 7:00 and 8:30 p.m. in the Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1501 Waverley St., and one half hour prior to the service in Immanuel Pentecostal Church (9:30 a.m.) Saturday.

Special thanks to all the nursing staff at the Victoria General Hospital, Dr. Maxwell, Dr. Scurrah and Dr. Goldberg, as well as to Verna and Dave, Frank and Florida and Mike and Linda for their support.

Elvin knew Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour and knew the Peace of God in his life and was thankful that God had given him time to find his way to the Cross of Jesus.

“But I would not have you to be ignorant, bretheren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

For this way we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trump of God; and the dead in Christ shall rise first.

Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds,

to meet the Lord in the air; and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Wherefore comfort one another with these words.”
