Don was a lifelong resident of Winnipeg. But for a brief 3-year stint on the then unpaved streets of a new suburb called Fort Garry in the early 50’s, he lived in Tuxedo and River Heights his entire life. Don graduated from the University of Manitoba with a BA and from the School of Law. After practicing law upon graduation, he joined Prudential Life. He then spent most of his career as VP and Legal counsel at Monarch Life Assurance.
Don was very engaged in his community and well beyond. He was an active participant and fund raiser to have the first of its kind indoor arena built at River Heights. He was one of the founding group that had the Winnipeg Squash Club built in its existing site as well as being a ranked squash player for many years. He was part of the management group that raised the funds to keep the then, WHA Jets in Winnipeg, ultimately leading to Avco cup championships and the signing of the first Swedish players in North American pro hockey. Don loved everything about golf. He worked on the grounds crew at St. Charles as a teenager. He would later become a very good player in his own right and was a member at Niakwa. He would later go back to his roots as a 43-year member of St. Charles.
Don loved politics. He was an unabashed Conservative and worked campaigns Provincially and Federally with leaders like Duff Roblin, Bud Sherman, Sterling Lyon and Sidney Spivak. Premier Filman recognized his many accomplishments and appointed Don as Chairman of MPIC during his time in office.
For all his accomplishments in business, sports and politics, Don was a man of faith. He attended Elim Chapel and Bethesda Churches. He was most proud of a 50-year association with the Billy Graham organization and became the president of the Canadian organization.
Don is survived by his wife Marian (Hull), sister Patricia Jacobs of Greensboro, NC, a son Paul of Bedford, NH and grandchildren Chris and Alexandra of Charlotte, NC. A daughter Marcia passed away in May 2018.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 11:00 am at Elim Chapel, 546 Portage Avenue.
Special thank you to Dr. Al Schroeder for his enduring friendship and support.
