It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Doug Harrison on May 27, 2026 at the age of 77 with family by his side at Riverview Health Centre.
Doug leaves behind the love of his life and devoted wife Eleanor; daughters Sharla (Bryan), Melanie (Ryan), his loving grandchildren Kieryn and Rylan who were the pride and joy of his life, as well as many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Doug was predeceased by his parents William John “WJ” and Thelma Harrison, brothers Alan, Barry, Wesley, Gordon, and Blaine.
Doug was born May 29, 1948 to WJ and Thelma and grew up in Graysville, Manitoba. He was a farm kid, a talented athlete, and a redhead who was always up for a little mischief. Stories from his childhood often featured lively antics that kept his family, teachers, and the community guessing what he would do next. Doug’s spirited mischief kept everyone guessing right up to the end.
Doug formed deep, lasting bonds and considered himself lucky to share his life with so many wonderful people from ball diamonds to golf courses, curling sheets, weekend getaway adventures, seasonal trips to the everyday moments in between. Doug created connections that shaped his life. He cherished everyone as family, which he treasured most.
Of all the relationships Doug built throughout his life, none meant more to him than the family he created with his wife of 38 years, Eleanor. They shared many memories, but their happiest moments were spent travelling side by side. They spent the summers glamping in Manitoba and escaped to the warmth of Mexico, Arizona and finally their perfect spot in Cathedral City, California. Everywhere they went they made lasting friendships, but the greatest gift was their time together and countless memories in their home away from home.
Doug took immense pride in his daughters Sharla and Melanie and found the greatest joy in his role as Papa to Kieryn and Rylan. His love for his girls and grandchildren was infinite and he cherished every moment. He was the biggest supporter and was always front and center with love, support, and guidance, though never shy about giving his two cents worth with complete honesty.
Sports were a huge part of Doug’s life. He was an accomplished curler who competed in 21 Manitoba Men’s Championships, won 5 Provincial titles across men’s, mixed, senior and master competitions and represented Manitoba at 5 Canadian championships including the 1978 Brier. His dedication to curling earned him induction into the Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame in 2023 recognizing his lasting contributions and outstanding achievements.
Baseball was also a passion for Doug. Growing up in the Carman and Graysville area, he was a talented pitcher and played with the legendary 1969 Carman Junior Goldeyes, a team that was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame.
Whether it was on the baseball diamond or curling rink, Doug’s competitive spirit and love for sports was evident to all who knew him. He had a famously competitive streak, one that made every game feel like a championship. Those who curled with him would remember that a broom or two didn’t always survive a tough end but even in those moments his passion was part of his charm. He played hard, cared deeply and brought energy to the many games he played.
Doug was a dedicated worker with a strong work ethic throughout his life spending 29 years with the City of Winnipeg. Retirement didn’t slow him down, he simply shifted gears where the asphalt crew he worked alongside became family. Doug’s pride in his work and the friendships he built reflected his loyalty and drive.
Doug believed in working hard, but he also knew how to enjoy life. When he wasn’t working, there was a good chance you could find him on the golf course with friends and family. Golf gave him another opportunity to do what he loved most. Never one to let a lost ball ruin a good round, Doug was known to keep a few extra balls in his pocket and casually drop one onto the fairway when a shot disappeared into the trees.
Doug will be remembered for not only his remarkable achievements, but for his red hair, cheesy grin, quick wit, and a great sense of humor that could lighten even the most serious of moments. Friends and family will forever cherish the stories, laughter, and memories created. He will be remembered for his strength and deep love he had for his family and friends.
Our family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the Palliative Care doctors, nurses, health care aides, and all the members of the health care team at Riverview Health Centre who cared for Doug.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
