Joan was born in Keddington, Suffolk England on July 12th, 1922, to Fred and Gladys Self. She worked various jobs after completing her schooling. Then, during World War 11, she met and married my father Swen, a Canadian soldier. Together, while in England, they had their first daughter, Beverly.
After the war, dad was shipped back home to Canada, and several months after that, in 1946, Joan and Beverly were finally able to join him. They lived in Piney, Manitoba and that is when their second daughter Sandie, came along.
Eventually they moved to Winnipeg and bought a home on Ebby Avenue. Joan kept a large garden that helped to keep food on the table in tough times.
She loved to embroider, crochet, knit and sew! She spent many hours making clothes for her two daughters and later for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. We all have at least one of her beautiful quilts.
Joan also loved to cook, and we always enjoyed the meals she would create out of seemingly nothing. Even when Bev and Sandie were young and times were very hard, we always had good meals on the table. She always took great pleasure and pride in preparing meals for her entire family over the years.
She remained active cooking and doing her needlework her whole life, until her eyesight began to fail in her early 90’s.
Joan was predeceased by eldest daughter Beverly in June of 2009. Her husband Swen, the love of her life, in February of 2014, and her son-in-law Alvin in early 2026.
Joan is survived by her daughter Sandie Denhard, grandson Ryan, great grandchildren Mickenzie, Cordyn, Kyra and Keltyn. Granddaughter Cindy Kennedy (Stephen), great grandchildren Breanna and Jaxin. Grandson Bob Knight (Lisa), great grandson Shane. Granddaughter Dianne Wiebe (Jaime), great granddaughter Kelsey Brown (Jeremy) and great, great granddaughters Ivy, Nora and Wren. As well as her last sibling Eileen who is still lives in England.
The funeral service will be held on May 29th, 2026, at 2:00pm with luncheon to follow on site at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home at 1291 McGillivray Boulevard, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 5Y4.
