Gary passed away peacefully on March 17th, 2025 surrounded by family, after a lengthy stay at St. Boniface Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit.
On April 1st, 1945, Gary was born in the small town of Biggar, SK, to the proud parents of Ann Labrecque and Harry Back. Growing up, his passion was hockey in all its forms – street hockey in the summer and ice hockey in the winter. He was a talented and enthusiastic player spending many hours playing the game he loved. Gary continued to cultivate a love of many sports including boxing, basketball, football, curling, and baseball.
On October 11, 1969, Gary married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth. Days later, they moved to Winnipeg to begin their married life together. To support his family, Gary worked for 33 years with Canada Post, creating lifelong friendships with co-workers. Additionally, he spent many hours volunteering with the Knights of Columbus at St. John Brebeuf and St. Vital Parish.
After retirement, Gary kept himself busy pursuing many avenues of interest. He enjoyed part-time employment at the MTS centre, where he had the opportunity to watch the sports he loved, listen to the musicians he admired, and explore new areas of interest. He became an avid reader, spending many hours with a good book, a cup of tea, and his beloved dog, Gabby curled up on his lap. He was also musically inclined pursuing hobbies such as learning the piano, accordion, ukulele, and guitar. Additionally, over the many decades of his life, he and Elizabeth enjoyed travelling, visiting Europe, the continental United States, Hawaii and Canada. Above all, he loved his family deeply. They will miss his loving smile, reassuring hugs, brilliant dad jokes, and quiet supportive presence. “To live in hearts we leave behind, is not to die”.
Mourning his loss is his loving wife Elizabeth, his daughter Lisa (Kevin), his grandchildren (Rhiannon, Declan and Catriona) as well as his siblings Glen (Judy), Brian (Norma), Brenda (Sheldon), Barb (David), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service will take place Thursday, March 27th, 2025 at 11:15 at St. Vital Parish located in 1629 Pembina Hwy.
