George Leslie Arthur Dunmall

1920 - 2014

Peacefully, with his family by his side, George Dunmall passed away on November 29, 2014 at the age of 94.He followed his bride of 66 years, Mary (Mae) Dunmall, who passed away on November 23, 2014. Mae's obituary was printed November 29.

George and Mae will be sadly missed and always loved by their sons, Larry (Sharon) and Christopher (Sharon). Their lives were centered on their family and they especially loved time with their grandchildren: Jeffrey (Shaughnessy), Karen (Tim), Adrian and Travis. In later years, Dad and Mom were happiest when visited by their five great-grandchildren: Ben, Owen, Jenna, Gavin and Weston. They made each person feel special.

George dedicated his life to keeping us safe. He joined the Second World War on July 12, 1940 as a Royal Air Force pilot where he served faithfully until October 24, 1945. George valiantly flew Sterling aircraft for the resistance in Italy, France, Norway and Denmark. Back in Winnipeg, George was the second officer hired by the St. James Police Department, later amalgamated into the Winnipeg Police Department. He served for more than 30 years, retiring in 1979. Dad led many investigations, including the team that solved the Great Winnipeg Gold Robbery of 1966.

George loved Betula Lake where he would sit deep in the woods in the middle of a blueberry patch filling gallon ice cream pails. The best days were when his grandchildren and dogs Misty and Skye came to visit. Mae and George had a special marriage spanning 66 years.They were a constant support for each other and at Deer Lodge would park their wheelchairs together and hold hands: a storybook life-long romance. Faith was an important part of their lives. Mae and George were devote Catholics and active members of the church parishes at St. Ann's and St. Paul the Apostle, attending regular church services at Deer Lodge.

A funeral mass for George and Mae will be held Thursday, December 4 at 10:15 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle (2400 Portage Ave). We welcome everyone to stay for a lunch reception following the service. The staff for veterans at Deer Lodge Tower 4 did a masterful job of caring for George. Thank you. His rose will be missed deeply. George, we all aspire to accomplish as much and be as widely loved as you. We know you are happy with Mom. Rest in peace, Dad.
