We lovingly remember Gerald James Unraw, who passed away peacefully in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on November 13, 2025 at the age of 80, following an unfortunate fall that resulted in a fractured hip and subsequent complications. Gerry lived a full and meaningful life, one defined by his unwavering faith, love for his family, and commitment to serving others.
Born on June 27, 1945 in Morden Manitoba, Gerry grew up with a deep sense of responsibility and compassion. His faith in God was the foundation of everything he did, shaping both his actions and his character. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and his family was always his greatest joy. Gerry is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine; his children Cheryl (Troy) Sczech, Jason Unraw and Nicole (Ryan) Sneath; his cherished grandchildren Jarrett (Brittany), Jordan, Joshua, Austin, Evan, Ally, Nolan and Lucas; and his siblings Harold (Lori) Unraw, Richard (Debbie) Unraw, Lenore Unraw and Lawrence (Joy) Unraw. He loved his family deeply and was so proud of each of them.
Gerry began his career with the Fort Garry Police Department and later served with the Winnipeg Police Department, where he faced many exciting and difficult challenges. He was an inaugural member of the first Winnipeg dive team, the Winnipeg Underwater Search & Recovery Unit, where he encountered numerous challenging situations and became a trusted and respected colleague for his courage, skill, and calm under pressure. He later transitioned to a long career with the federal government as an investigator, a role that allowed him to continue serving the public while also supporting his family life. He loved sharing stories of his adventures with his grandchildren, passing on his experiences and lessons in a way they will always remember.
Gerry was a man who could always be counted on. Whether it was offering a helping hand, a word of advice, or simply his presence, he was always there for his family, friends and anyone in need. He dedicated many years of service as a board member at the Manhattan Beach Retreat Centre, volunteering countless hours on projects that supported the place he loved so dearly. Camp held a special place in his heart, and he treasured the time, relationships, and purpose he found there. His dependability, faithfulness, and generosity of spirit defined him, and his legacy of love and service will live on through all who knew him.
A private memorial service will take place at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Manhattan Beach Retreat Centre to support the pool building project (www.mbrc.ca), in honour of Gerry’s faith-based dedication to service and community. Please note “In memory of Gerry Unraw” in the memo section.
As we hold his memory close, our faith reassures us that this is not goodbye, but “see you later.” We look forward with hope to the day we will be reunited again.
