Grant Del Bigio

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Grant Del Bigio announces his peaceful passing in the late afternoon of July 17, 2020. It brings us great peace to know that Grant passed at home on his own terms, in the arms of his family.

He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his three daughters, Karen, Janice (Ray) and Elaine (Rod); seven grandchildren, John (Teagan), Lindsay (Giosef), Robert (Stephanie), Derek (Kelsey), Jennifer (Jeremy), Rachel (Finn), and Laura (Joel); as well as six great-grandchildren John, Ben, Lorenzo, Tyler, Ivano, and Elliana. He also leaves to mourn his loving siblings, Ronnie and Beverly, many other family members, and his faithful dog Macy. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Frances, to whom he was married for over 55 years, as well as his parents Bonita and Philip.

Grant was born November 5, 1932 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and was raised in Elmwood by his loving family. Growing up, Grant was extremely outgoing and loved to socialize. He was a talented athlete, participating in hockey, lacrosse, and soccer to name a few. Directly out of high school he began to work in the family business alongside his father and brother. This proved to be the right path for him, as it was at Del’s Electric that he met the love of his life, Frances. They got married on October 15, 1955 and raised their three daughters in East Kildonan.

During their time together, Grant and Frances enjoyed many years travelling with their children, dining out, and spending time with family and friends. Whether it was swimming on his lunch hour at the YMCA, curling at Rossmere Country Club, or walking the track at the Rady Centre, he loved to keep active.

He was a man who never sat still and his boundless energy led him to develop his many diverse interests. Grant was an avid reader of history and politics who loved to share his knowledge. His ingenuity eventually led him to take on the role of Federal Returning Officer with Frances by his side as the election clerk.

Some of his happiest times were at the cottage on Lake Winnipeg in Whytewold. He spent endless hours sitting in his chair overlooking the water, helping the grandkids collect rocks or pushing them on the swing. Grant took a hands-on approach to everything he did and was a very devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His true passion was raising his children and grandchildren and he looked forward to attending their activities and hosting their friends. We have many memories of him jokingly singing and dancing around the house for our amusement.

In his later years, Grant loved “going for a spin”. This weekly routine turned into a daily ritual with him eventually switching from the driver to the passenger seat. There was nothing he enjoyed more than being surrounded by food and family. We spent every evening gathered in the family room where, regardless of the activity, he was content simply being with us.

Dad, you lived life to the fullest, you travelled every path, and you did it on your own terms while always keeping us foremost in your life. Grandpa, you will always be remembered for your bright eyes and quick wit. We will cherish our wonderful conversations and memories with you. You will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts. We Love You!!

A service will be held by invitation only, at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
