Heinz (Henry) Martin Doerr on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at the age of 76.
Survived by his partner of 42 years, Vernon; his sister Helga (Klaus) in Germany, her son Udo and grandaughter Celina; his son Frank (Ulricka) born and baptized in Winnipeg and grandson Maik; a very special aunt Franziska (Friedel); good friends Isholde and Mike in the U.S., and many cousins internationally.
Heinz was born in 1937 in Diedishiem, Germany. As a young man he worked in the vineyards for 4 years before immigrating to Canada in 1957. In Winnipeg he worked for 4 years for the CN Railway before joining the Misericordia General Hospital as an orderly. In 1962 Heinz became a Canadian citizen taking an oathe to the Queen and Country. He took this very seriously and became a dedicated Monarchist, changing his name to Henry. Also in this year he started working as an assistant in the Pathology Dept. at the Misericordia. The highlight of his career at the hospital was recognizing the need for and initiating a memorial grave for fetuses from the maternity ward. For 5 years after his retirement he volunteered at these memorial burials until the maternity ward closed. Heinz also volunteered at the Agape Table twice weekly for 6 years as well as at St. Mary's Cathedral twice a week for collection until this February. Heinz loved gardening, especially growing his tomatoes from seed in the spring to harvesting his grapes in the fall. He loved his cats and had many over the years, his last being his favorite, a beautiful Maine Coon named Dolly. Heinz liked to travel, holidaying in Acapulco every winter and Europe every other year.
Family and friends would like to thank the staff at Cancer Care, Health Sciences Centre and a very special thank you to the staff in Palliative Care at St. Boniface Hospital for the kind and respectful treatment given to our lovely, sweet, gentle Heinz.
No flowers please, Donations to Palliative Care at St. Boniface would be greatly appreciated.
