Peacefully, we announce the passing of Irene Swan on November 19, 2025, at the age of 94, at St. Boniface Hospital. She will be deeply missed by her loving husband of 75 years, Jack Swan, their six children; Jack, Marty, Jeff, Bob, Cindy, and Ken—along with her seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Irene is also survived by her brother, Alf of Princeton, BC.
Born and raised in Winnipeg, MB, Irene spent her entire life in the city she loved. She and Jack were inseparable throughout their 75 years of marriage, building a warm and lively home in Fort Richmond where they raised their five boys and one girl. Irene was a devoted homemaker and later worked as a secretary at the University of Manitoba, forming many cherished friendships along the way.
Some of Irene’s fondest memories were made at the family cottage at Spruce Sands, where weekends and summers were filled with family dinners, laughter, and nightly games of Trivial Pursuit. Later in life, Irene found joy in travelling with Jack and her mother, Nellie. The three were constant companions as they explored the world together on cruises and visits to numerous countries.
In time, Irene discovered a love for casino bus trips with Jack, travelling across Canada and the U.S. She delighted in the company of friends on the bus and in the thrill of “spending the bus tour’s money”—always returning with more than she left with and often the cost of the trip itself. She also treasured trips to Arizona to visit her son Jack and to Victoria to spend time with her daughter Cindy.
When at home, Irene could often be found knitting—an activity at which she was remarkably skilled. She was known to carry on full conversations without ever glancing at her hands, creating beautiful dishcloths, slippers, scarves, toques, and blankets for those she loved. She never wasted a single strand of wool, and her family cherishes the unique handmade items she gifted over the years.
There are countless memories we could share, but what we will forever remember about Irene is her unwavering positivity and her kindness toward everyone she met. She never spoke an unkind word and seemed never to have a bad day. Her warm hugs, gentle nature, and loving presence will be deeply missed.
We are grateful for the many precious memories Irene leaves with us. As she always ended her calls, we feel it is only fitting to say: “Bye for now.”
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of Shaftesbury Park for their care , kindness, and support.
