James (Jim) Barlow Gould passed away peacefully on July 13, 2026 in Winnipeg.
Dad was born in Accrington, Lancashire, England. Growing up during the war, he frequented bomb shelters and learned to be resourceful.
In 1956, seeking new opportunities, he immigrated to Canada with plans to continue on to Vancouver. However, during a train stop in Winnipeg, he decided to make Winnipeg his home. A few years later, dad met the love of his life Carolyn, on a blind date. They celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary in June.
Dad had a long career as a Machinist in the Chemistry Department at the University of Manitoba. His side interest in astronomy led him to build his own mobile planetarium and he was hired to entertain school groups and at children’s birthday parties.
During his retirement, dad dedicated time to writing and self-publishing a novel set in outer space.
Over the years, the family made many trips to England to visit his sister and her family where truly happy memories were made.
Dad was a quietly generous man, not only through donations but through deeds. His favorite charity was the Winnipeg Humane Society as he loved all animals. His precious fur baby Zyra will miss him dearly.
Jim will be remembered by his devoted wife Carolyn and his daughters, Anne-Marie (Gord), Linda (Gord), and his grandchildren, Jordan (Sammi), Meagan (Matthew), Matthew (Taya), Morgyn (Josh), Troy (Kristin), Reid (Kristy) as well eight great-grandchildren.
He will also be remembered fondly by his nieces Julie, Shirley, and nephews Paul and Mark and their families in England.
A private service will be held at a later date. The family invites those who wish to honor his memory to make a donation to a charity of their choice or to the Winnipeg Humane Society.
Dad will be forever loved, deeply missed and remembered always.
“May the Lord watch between me and thee while we are absent one from the other.”
