Joan Ledoux

Joan was the youngest of 17 children and grew up in Camperville, MB. She often spoke fondly of her childhood and the memories she made with her family. She loved remembering the simple moments, like having tea and toast by the fireplace and riding in a horse-drawn carriage while fishing. These stories were a special part of who Joan was, and she carried those memories with her throughout her life.

In 1969, Joan fell in love with and married Jim Ledoux. Together, they built a beautiful life and remained married until Jim’s passing in 2023. They began their family in Camperville, welcoming daughters Diane, Melanie and their son, Marty.

Joan was an incredible mother who loved her children unconditionally. Her family meant everything to her, and she was always proud of the people her children became.

Joan went to university and became a teacher. The young family eventually moved from Camperville to Flin Flon, which Joan would call home for the next 45 years. She spent much of her working career with Manitoba Hydro. After retiring from Hydro, Joan continued serving her community as an elected official with the Manitoba Métis Federation, a position she held until just a few months before her passing.

Joan was a proud Métis woman who cared deeply about her people and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of Métis people throughout Manitoba. She believed strongly in the importance of education, and one of her greatest joys was seeing all three of her children go on to pursue further education.

Joan’s dream was to eventually retire in Winnipeg. She was fortunate enough to spend a few happy months enjoying her retirement there before her passing.

Joan loved life, and she especially loved to travel. She travelled the world, visiting places such as Greece, Jordan, Mexico, Cuba, New York, and Israel, as well as travelling from coast to coast across Canada. Whenever we asked Joan about her travels, she would simply smile and say, “What happens on my trips stays on my trips.” That was Joan — always ready for a little adventure and always with a story to tell.

Joan was also famous in Flin Flon for her bannock. She loved making it, sharing it, and, of course, telling stories along the way. She was always happy to pass on her recipes, knowledge, and teachings to anyone who wanted to learn. Through her cooking and her stories, she shared much more than food — she shared a part of herself.

But of all the titles Joan held throughout her life, her favourite and greatest accomplishment was being Grandma. She adored her grandchildren, Meagan, Lexi, Parker, and Cooper, and she had a special relationship with each one of them.

With Grandma, there was always fun to be had. Their time together was filled with laughter, silliness, crazy adventures, and memories they will carry with them forever. But Joan was also a soft place for them to land. Whenever they needed someone to listen, someone to comfort them, or simply someone to be there, Grandma was there.

Joan was a woman who loved deeply, laughed often, and lived life on her own terms. Her life was not always easy, but she chose fun, positivity, kindness, and love. She found joy in her family, her friends, her travels, her stories, and the countless people whose lives she touched.

Joan was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jim, and her daughter, Melanie. She was also predeceased by many family members and loved ones who had gone before her.

Joan leaves behind her daughter, Diane Delaronde (Marvin); her son, Marty LeDoux (Joanna); her grandchildren, Meagan, Lexi, Parker, and Cooper; and her remaining sisters, along with many family members, friends, and loved ones.

Joan leaves behind more than memories. She leaves behind the lessons she taught, the stories she shared, the laughter she brought, and the love she gave so freely.

She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.

Committal service will be held on October 3 at 2:00 pm in Our Lady of Seven Sorrows Cemetery, Camperville, Manitoba
