Ka Chi "John" Yeung

24 July , 194020 May , 2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ka Chi "John" Yeung on May 20, 2019, surrounded by family at St. Boniface Hospital.

Ka Chi was predeceased by his parents Fai-Wah Yeung and Cheng Wai Hing. He is survived by his wife, Grace, of 39 years; sons, Gordon and Colin (Mallory); and siblings, Ka Lin, Ka Yan, Ka Yee, Ka Bik, Ka Tin and Ka Yung; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ka Chi immigrated to Canada from Hong Kong in August 1964, after spending 2 years as a teacher. He attended the University of Manitoba and graduated from Plant Science in 1971. He remained in Agriculture at the U of M until 1991 before moving back to teaching, as an Instructor with Red River College until his retirement in 2012.

Ka Chi was quiet-natured but had an unquestionable dedication to family and friends. He was hard working and ever the handyman, never one to turn down a challenging task. He always loved the outdoors, enjoying swimming, bike rides and strolls in the park. He also looked forward to his daily trips to the coffee shop.

Memorial service will be held on Sunday May 26, 2019 at 9:30 am at Thomson "In the Park" 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. Burial service will be held on Monday May 27, 2019 at 10:00 am at Waverley Memorial Gardens, 1501 Waverley Street.

Dear John Yeung's family,

I worked on the soil survey program for some 36 years. As the program grew so did the laboratory program and Johnny was always a major part of the laboratory support to the field program.

John was always so cheerful and capable in his work with the soil survey. He worked on all aspects of the laboratory program and got along so well with both our field staff and with his co workers in the lab. John also assisted in some of the field work which I think he enjoyed based on his background in plant science.

I recall one winter day out cross country skiing in King's Park. Coming toward me on the trail was John and one of his children. We stopped an talked for a bit about his new work at Red River College and his family. It was apparent that John was very keen on the teaching aspects of his new work and that he was extremely devoted to his family.

John's professional approach to his work and his caring and support for his family were all so important to him. John will be missed by all who knew him.

Sincerely, Gordon Mills

Dear Grace, Gordon, Collin and Family,

I am so sorry to hear of John's passing. We worked together for the Soil Survey in the Ellis Building from the 1970s up to the 1990s. John was a very good worker, with a wonderful, always positive attitude. We worked together in the lab and he also assisted me on a soil mapping project in the Whiteshell in the early 1980s. He was also a close friend. I have many happy memories of golfing with John and other colleagues at Crescent Drive after work, as well as winter trips to Florida, California and Mazatlán. My sister Stephanie also knew John in his next career at Red River College. A wonderful friend and devoted father, who I'm sure will be missed by all who knew him.
