On the evening of September 10, 2025, with her family by her side, Lorraine Elizabeth “Joan” Vanstone peacefully passed away after a lengthy illness, at the age of 84. Joan, as she was affectionately known, leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and generosity that touched all who knew her.
Family was Joan’s greatest joy. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her children, Laurie (Ken) of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Lorne (Cara) of Calgary, Alberta. Her grandchildren, Riley (Ahkila), Mitchell (Annalise), and Julia, will always cherish the many memories they shared with their beloved Granny. Joan’s puppy, Daisy, along with her grand-puppies Shelby, Byfuglien, and Timber, will also feel her absence.
Joan was predeceased by her loving husband of 61 years, Robert “Bob” Vanstone; her eldest son, Ross William Vanstone, who passed away at the age of 24; and her younger brother, Lorne Jamison.
Born on December 10, 1940, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Edith Marjorie Jamison (née Jacques) and Clifford Ross Jamison, Joan grew up with a strong work ethic and adventurous spirit. She held many jobs in her youth before beginning her career as a financial planner with Scotiabank. She dedicated over 30 years to the bank, retiring in 2005 when her second grandchild was on the way. Many of her lifelong friendships were formed during her time at Scotiabank. Joan also generously gave her time to volunteering with the Catholic Women’s League at St. Alphonsus Church.
Joan never missed a chance to support her grandchildren—attending every dance recital, sporting event, speed skating race, church celebration, Christmas concert, and graduation. Her life centered around her family, and she relished every moment spent with them.
Her sanctuary was her cottage in Lakeshore Heights, Manitoba, where she loved the sunshine and sandy shores of Grand Beach. Winters often took her to Hawaii with family or to Mexico to celebrate Lorne and Cara’s wedding.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Extendicare Kildonan Personal Care Home, where Joan resided for the past three years. Their compassion, care, and support in her final days were invaluable. Special thanks go to Charlotte, Cris, Trina, Lynne, and many others whose kindness and expertise ensured comfort and peace for Joan.
The family is also deeply thankful to all who visited, called, and sent messages in her final days, reminding Joan of the many lives she had touched.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, the Diabetes Foundation, or the Humane Society.
Joan, Mom, Granny—we love you. Rest in peace. God has you in His keeping; we have you in our hearts.
A combined funeral service to honour both Bob and Joan is planned for Friday October 10th, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Church, 315 Munroe Avenue in Winnipeg.
