(neé MIRLA FLOR LIM DAVID)
Peacefully in her sleep with family by her side on 13 March 2024 at the age of 87.
Lovingly remembered by her husband Edmund Ebrahim Faridy, her children Trent (Sunny) and Fay, her grandchildren Robbie, Justin, Alex and Kevin, and her nephews Lonnie and Robert. She was predeceased by her parents Fernando David and Juliana Lim David and her brothers Ding and Will.
From rural Pampanga in the Philippines to Winnipeg, Mirla led an adventurous life, loved a good laugh, and always looked for the positive even in the most challenging times. Although she lived her life on “Filipino time”, Mirla was a woman ahead of her time. She graduated from high school at 16, graduated from medicine at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila at 21 and, as Dr. David, practiced medicine under her own surname decades before it was common. After pursuing further medical studies in the US and meeting her beloved husband Edmund in Denver, she was one of the earliest Filipinos to immigrate to Winnipeg in 1966 and was the first woman to practice medicine at the Winnipeg Clinic. She loved traveling the world, playing music, and ballroom dancing. With her magical green thumb, and endless pots of “garlic stew,” she grew the most improbably lush tropical plants despite the northern cold. As a big believer in higher education, it brought her great joy to help support Filipino youth pursue post-secondary education through the UST Alumni Association scholarship. A celebration of life will be held in the summer.
The family gives their heartfelt thanks to Father Dado Parrenas, Vicente Parrenas, Brian and Michelle Sharkey, Paul Hakim, Dr. Felix Sikora, Michelle C-Balancio and the St. Ignatius Church community.
