It is with deep sadness that the family of Myrna Bobrowich regrets to announce her passing on May 22, 2024, at the age of 85. Myrna will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Kathy (Darryl Chody) and Laurie (Lorne Jonsson); grandsons Jason Chody (Heidi) and Kevin Chody (Marjorie); and three great-grandchildren whom she adored and cherished, Abby, Lochlan, and Jack Chody. Myrna also leaves to cherish her memory her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Joanne and Charlie Bobrowich; her very dearest friends Joan Shaw, Betty Ann Skaritko, the Babaluk’s, and Irv Heibert; and many other relatives and friends that she made throughout her life. Myrna was predeceased far too early by her loving husband David, parents Peter and Katherine Lysyk, sister Helen Bradbury, niece Janice Starodub, and great-granddaughter Mya Chody who passed away in infancy.
Myrna was born on January 12, 1939 to Peter and Katherine Lysyk. Together with her older sister Helen, the family made their home in Fort Rouge. She attended Earl Grey School and Kelvin High School where she made some life long friends. During this time, she learned to play the accordion and was quite successful. She participated in lessons, competitions and performed when invited to play on the radio.
After high school, Myrna worked for the CNR at the Main Street office. This is where she met her life long friend Joan Shaw. Years later, they worked together again for the City of Winnipeg. Myrna was proud of her work with the City and enjoyed sharing stories from her time there.
Myrna married her husband David on November 15, 1958 and a few years later they built their family home in St. Andrews where they raised their daughters Kathy and Laurie. Myrna and Dave had lots of fun together with their many friends and family in the community and at the cottage they built at Beresford Lake. Myrna enjoyed fishing, dancing, playing cards especially Canasta, sewing, and doing needlepoint. After Dave’s passing in 1993, Myrna took up water colour and oil painting. She turned out to be quite talented at this, but never considered herself an artist. Many friends and family have been gifted with her artwork and proudly have them on display in their homes.
Myrna also enjoyed travelling and going on holidays. Harlingen Texas was a popular destination for her after her daughter Laurie and her husband Lorne moved there in 1993. She also went to Disneyworld, Las Vegas, Palm Springs, San Fransisco, and a Caribbean cruise with the whole family. A cruise to Alaska with Kathy and Laurie was a highlight for her as was a bucket list trip to Niagara Falls.
Myrna enjoyed cooking and baking. She was famous for her beet leaf cabbage rolls and loved sharing oatmeal cookies, muffins, home-made jam, and dinner leftovers with her family and friends. Her great grandchildren will always remember her for “Great Gran Rice” which she made lovingly for them with lots of butter!
Myrna was a hard-worker, whether it was at work, at home, or at the cottage. After Dave’s passing, she particularly enjoyed volunteering at schools with the teachers in the family. She loved helping and working with all the students she encountered whether it was with her niece Janice, daughter Kathy, or grandson Jason. Lots of students benefitted from the time she took with them all.
Myrna will always be remembered though for her “high fives”, $5 bills that she gave her great grandchildren in exchange for a “high five” every time she was with them. She was a strong supporter of them and would cheer for them at hockey, baseball, football, dance recitals, Christmas concerts, and any other activity they were involved in. They will miss her very much.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at N3 East at Concordia Hospital for their compassionate care. We would also like to send a special thank you to Dr. Dennis Caners, Mom’s family physician for the last 40 years, for taking care of all her health care needs. Mom felt very blessed to have him as her doctor.
If you would like to make a donation in Myrna’s memory, please consider giving to Multiple Sclerosis Canada or to Cancer Care Manitoba.
Following a private family interment, a Celebration of Myrna's life will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, May 31, at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home for family and friends.
