Phyllis Ivy Hunter

We are saddened to announce the passing of Phyllis Hunter (née Moore) after a short illness. She was predeceased by her husband Harold, on June 8, 2024. She leaves to mourn her cousin, Alice McSweeny of Victoria, BC, along with many nieces and nephews across Canada and the United States. Her passing is felt profoundly by her dear friend of many years, Sharon Dowell, and by the many friends whose lives she brightened and uplifted.

Phyllis was known for her energy, talent and commitment to others. She earned recognition throughout her career while always focusing on improving the lives of those around her. She hoped to reach 100, and although she fell short by two years, she continued to live independently, maintain her cottage at the lake, drive her car, and stay active in her community until the end.

Born in New Westminster, BC, Phyllis completed her schooling and teacher training there. She taught for five years in British Columbia before continuing her career in Quebec, Wales (UK), and the Winnipeg School Division. In Winnipeg, she became known as an exceptional teacher and respected educational leader, later being appointed a school principal at a young age.

A highlight of her career was serving as President of the Manitoba Teachers’ Society, a role she greatly enjoyed. She also served as president of the Winnipeg Teachers’ Association, the Retired Teachers’ Association of Manitoba, and the Manitoba Society of Seniors. A member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Society for more than forty years, she held both Chapter and Provincial presidencies and chaired several international committees. She received the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for excellence in teaching.

Outside of her professional life, Phyllis loved the outdoors. She hiked in Whiteshell, explored the mountains of BC, and travelled widely, from Europe to the deserts of Arizona. Her involvement with Nature Manitoba brought lasting friendships with fellow canoeists and cross-country skiers. Cold weather – or even the occasional canoe roll-over – never deterred her. Her cottage at Lake Brereton was the starting point for many adventures with friends old and new, memories that will be fondly remembered.

The family extends sincere thanks to the staff of Grace Hospital, 3rd Floor South, for their care and compassion, with special appreciation to nurse Sarah.

At Phyllis’s request, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd., on July 29, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, with eulogies starting around 2:30 pm.
