It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Potenciano Macalalad, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at the age of 76.
Potenciano is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Aida Macalalad, his children Raymond (Czarina) and Mary Jane (David), and his cherished grandchildren Jasmine (Dave), Jacob (May), Noah, and Mateo. He is also lovingly remembered by his siblings: Teresita (Vicente), Nemesia (Maximo), Lolita (Raymundo), Zosima, Renato (JC), Liberty (Renato), Luciano (Cherry), and Marcelina (Florence), along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents Honoria and Florentino Macalalad, and his brother Nicanor (Rosalinda).
Born in Tanauan, Batangas, Philippines, Potenciano was the eldest of ten siblings. He immigrated to Canada in 1974 where he built a life rooted in love, family, and hard work. He dedicated nearly 40 years of service to Canadian Bronze/CP Rail before retiring in 2018.
Potenciano lived a humble and fulfilling life. He found joy in simple pleasures like fishing trips with his brothers and friends, hours around the mahjong table, enjoying online games on his phone, and laughter-filled gatherings with his family. He had a naturally stern presence but was quick to crack a joke and make others laugh. His forwardness, love for his grandchildren, and big appetite for good food remained constant, even in his final days.
In his final chapter, he was lovingly cared for by his devoted wife, Aida, who stood faithfully by his side and provided strength, compassion, and unwavering support through every moment of his illness.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at CancerCare Manitoba, Health Sciences Centre, and Riverview Health Centre for their compassionate care.
Viewing will take place on Thursday, June 19, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1291 McGillivray Blvd, Winnipeg, MB.
Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, June 20, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John Cantius Church, 846 Burrows Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, followed by a reception in the church hall.
Cremation will take place privately following the reception.
Potenciano’s presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy of strength, humour, and love will live on in all who knew him.
