OBITUARY

Richard Brent Morison Smith

9 September, 1960 – 7 August, 2025
IN THE CARE OF

Thomson In The Park Funeral Home and Cemetery

In Loving Memory

In the evening hours of August 7, 2025 our beloved Richard took his final breath with his family by his side.

Richard was born on September 9, 1960, in Winnipeg, the eldest son of Franklin and Sharon Smith. He was predeceased by his mother, Sharon Ann (Morison) Smith (2023), and by his nephew Micah Kunzig (2020).

He leaves to mourn his beloved wife Roberta, his son Morison, and daughter Samantha (Dylan); his treasured Sheepadoodle Beamer; and his cherished grandchildren Levi, Lennon, and Calvin. Richard will also be deeply missed by his father Frank Smith; siblings Brenda (Gordon), Grant (Isaure), and Melissa; brother-in-law Randy (Carmela); numerous nieces and nephews; and his lifelong best friend Drew, who, despite the miles between them, always stayed close through visits, calls, and texts.

Richard will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, papa, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He was a man of generosity, love, and spirit, who brought people together through his adventurous nature and his remarkable gift for cooking.

His greatest joy was time spent with family, especially at the cottage on Pickerel Lake. There, countless memories were made—whether swimming and snorkeling, enjoying sunset boat rides scouting for wildlife, dirt biking with Morison, fishing in secret spots, foraging for mushrooms, or listening to his favourite music during happy hour on the deck with a G&T in hand. Richard was a master on the grill, and his meals were anticipated and celebrated by all. Evenings often ended with him sharing a favourite tequila, playing cards, or gazing at the stars with family nearby.

Music was woven through every part of Richard’s life. With an eclectic taste that spanned decades and genres, he filled his home with sound—often drawing from his vast vinyl record collection. From classics to hidden gems, he shared his love of music with family, introducing them to artists old and new.

A passionate Blue Bombers fan, Richard had a good-natured “love-hate” relationship with the team. Win or lose, he always came back to cheer them on. And when they scored, the whole room knew it—his famous shout of “TOUCH DOWN!” rang out with all the enthusiasm of a true fan.

Richard’s passing leaves a tremendous void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. His memory will be cherished forever.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nursing staff at Victoria Cancer Care, who cared for Richard with warmth and compassion, always greeting him with smiles and conversation that brightened his treatments.

Cremation has taken place. A private family Celebration of Life will be held on his birthday, September 9, 2025.

In honour of Richard, donations may be made to the Cancer Care Manitoba Foundation.
