Robert Edward Donnelly

March 7, 1944 – November 10, 2020

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Robert Donnelly passed away peacefully on November 10, 2020 at the Health Sciences Centre.

Bob will be lovingly remembered by his brother, Allan of Greenwood, B.C., his sister Diane (Craig Kellas), his nephews Cole, Matt (Amanda), Will and Jordan; his aunt, Doris Payne of Madison, South Dakota, as well as numerous cousins, friends and neighbours. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Burton and Alice (Kirkpatrick).

Bob was born on March 7, 1944 in Stratford, Ontario and the family moved to Winnipeg in 1947. He attended Churchill High School where he excelled at cross country running and developed a life-long interest in literature, the arts and music. Bob graduated from United College (University of Winnipeg) with an Arts degree, majoring in English.

In 1967, Bob got married (Kathie McLean) and later moved to Toronto. He worked as a teacher at Etobicoke Collegiate until his retirement. Bob taught English and Theatre Arts and coached the senior girls’ basketball to a couple of championships. Bob was a dedicated teacher with a keen interest in developing the ability, interests and potential in his students.

Upon retirement, Bob moved back to Winnipeg and renewed relationships with high school friends and family. Bob had a life-long passion for tennis, the arts, literature, music, history and travel. He collected art and became friends with many local artists. Bob was an avid reader, which expanded his knowledge on many topics. In relaxing moments, he would like to listen to his extensive collection of jazz and classical music.

Bob was extremely fit. He was an active tennis player into his seventies and enjoyed a lengthy walk every day. Bob was a social person and made many neighbourhood friendships. Bob was a wonderful neighbour, helpful, considerate, cheerful and engaging.

We are grateful to the H.S.C. staff in the SICU and to Dr. Robertson and Nurse Jennifer in the IICU for their care and kindness. We would like to thank Don Fletcher for being such a good friend, visiting and supporting Bob in his final months. We would also like to thank all of Bob’s neighbours that expressed concern and helped us throughout Bob’s illness.

Due to current restrictions, a celebration of Bob’s life will happen at a later date.

My condolences to Diane and all of Bob’s family. Bob was a good friend and neighbour to our family and we will all miss him. Bob was part of our little group of friends who met quite regularly to socialize ,eat good food, discuss the world situation ,and exchange views on the latest books, etc. Bob was always a great conversationalist with lots of good stories to tell and we enjoyed lots of good visits. Bob was a kind man and very thoughtful. I will miss his personalized cards as well as seeing him out working ,tending to his lawn and flowers .
My sympathy to the family for your loss.

What a gift that Bob got to spend such quality time with his family and friends in Winnipeg. I envied the walking partnership that Diane and Bob had, but what a wonderful memory, being there for one another. My heartfelt sympathy to the entire family, at losing a very special brother, uncle, and friend. Our thoughts are with you.
