With heavy hearts, we share the news of the peaceful passing of Theresia C. M. Van Dam, who gently left us at the age of 95. She went ready to be reunited with those she loved so deeply: her husband Henri Van Dam, the love of her life Mick Howarth, her son Leo, her daughter Wilmy, her sisters Paula and Jess, and Mick’s daughter Valerie, all of whom had gone before her.
Theresia was born in Roermond, the Netherlands, the eldest of four daughters to Leonard and Wilhelmina. At just 22, she bravely began a new chapter, immigrating to Canada and finding her first home in Estevan, Saskatchewan. It was there, in Estevan, that she and Henri Van Dam welcomed their four children into the world: Henri, Jack, Leo, and Wilmy.
Starting life in a new country and still learning English, she found treasured connections with two other families from the Netherlands, the Van den Hurks and the Ter Harts. These early friendships were a vital source of comfort and support as she and Henri built their life and raised their family in Canada. Theresia had a gift for making friends throughout her life and cherished many long-time connections right until her passing.
In 1969, the Van Dam family moved to Winnipeg. Here too, Theresia quickly nurtured close friendships and a strong support system with neighbours and her colleagues at work. She was a dedicated and proud employee at Eaton's for over 25 years, bringing her warmth to the Pine Room, Seven Seas Shop, and the China Department before retiring.
Her Catholic Faith was a quiet strength and a guiding light throughout Theresia’s life. She often said, “when I go to sleep, I pray for everyone,” a simple phrase that spoke volumes about her caring heart. Her rosary was always with her, a constant source of comfort.
A skill she learned from the Nuns in school, knitting remained a cherished way she filled her days with creativity. She poured her talent and warmth into countless beautiful Afghans, scarfs, pet sweaters, and toques sharing them as gifts of comfort. She also enjoyed creating intricate needlepoint pictures and tablecloths.
Theresia had a vibrant spirit and a keen eye for beauty, with a particular joy for fashion and fine jewelry. She always took pride in looking her best and enjoyed keeping up with the latest styles. Beyond her life in Canada, Theresia held a deep affection for her homeland, the Netherlands, and treasured her visits back. Over the years, she returned home an impressive 20 times, with her most recent trip being in September 2024.
Theresia was renowned for her exceptional baking, especially her comforting pies, delicious cookies, and special Christmas bread. She truly loved connecting with others and could effortlessly strike up a conversation with anyone. Hosting visitors for coffee and her homemade treats, often served with her treasured silverware from Holland, was a simple joy for her. Her distinctive accent and infectious smile were unforgettable. She was thoughtful and considerate, always remembering birthdays and offering her unique, insightful perspective on life’s journey.
She leaves behind a legacy of love in the hearts of her immediate family: her sons Henri (Jane) and Jack (Lydia), her grandchildren Eric, Randi (Ryan), Aaron, Robyn (Zane), Averi (Allan), Nicholas (Morgan), and Aimee (Jesse), along with her son-in-law Glen and daughter-in-law Kathryn. She is also survived by her sister Mieke and many beloved great-grandchildren who brought her so much joy. Her extended family includes Myrna (Barry), Lorraine (Ron), and Dave, along with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Upon leaving the Netherlands, “Resi” remained in the hearts of her distant family. Over the last number of years, Resi & Mieke spoke with each other, every other day. Mieke’s sons Leon and Jan William; Paula’s son Eric, daughter Wyn (deceased); Jess’s sons Leo, Hein and Guido were always welcoming her, with open arms, upon her return visits home. Resi will be missed by all of them, their spouses and their children.
Cremation has taken place.
A funeral service to celebrate Theresia’s life will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Bernadette’s Parish, 820 Cottonwood Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The family would like to express sincere gratitude to Dr. P.G. Mehta, Dr. Ed Pilat, the Palliative Care Team, and the staff at Concordia Hospital for their compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Cancer Care Manitoba.
