Doug Berger was born in Winston-Salem, NC. A proud graduate of RJ Reynolds High School class of 1946. He served 2 years in the U.S. Navy, before attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, from which he graduated in 1952. He met his future wife, Rosalind Mary Isom at UNC, and the couple moved to Atlanta, GA, where Doug worked as an accountant at General Motors for 35 years, with subsequent moves to Flint and West Bloomfield, MI, before moving back to Roswell, GA, working until retirement in 1987. After retirement, they moved to Surprise, AZ in 1999 where they lived for 25 years, until Rosalind's death in 2023. Doug lived at the Sun City West Assisted Living Facility until he passed on February 3, 2026.
Doug was a devoted family man. Road trip vacations were a chance for him to express his "inner Clark Griswold," as he expertly played the dual roles of tour guide and human GPS. Like his wife, Rosalind, Doug was a natural at "DIY" projects. With no formal training or experience in carpentry or construction, he bought himself a table saw, and undertook the task of enclosing the back porch of his first Midwestern home, crafting custom windows to block the extreme cold of winter, and the radiating heat of summer.
Doug was an avid sports enthusiast, who enjoyed football, basketball and golf. He not only followed his favorite teams and players with the eye of an amateur sports analyst, but paid close attention to recruiting & draft seasons. He had a nearly encyclopedic knowledge of the history of his beloved UNC Tarheel teams. Four days after he passed, the UNC men's basketball team beat Duke with a 3 point shot at the buzzer, perhaps an assist from Doug nudging the hand of divine providence.
Doug was also a lifelong learner. He acquired his first desktop computer at age 70, got an iPad in his 80's, and his first smartphone at age 94. When he and Rosalind no longer attended live performances, he would surf the internet, and the "request line" would be open to Rosalind, to enjoy their favorite performers, singing opera, Broadway, pop, country and gospel
Doug' spent the final two+ years of his life at Sun City West Assisted Living. Though physically frail and dependent on others to help him with activities in which he had been independent for nearly 95 years, he managed to touch the lives of others in ways that made a difference with his caring and understanding. While the scope of his physical world was shrinking, he expanded his capacity for connecting with others.
A special thanks to the entire staff at Sun City West Assisted Living, as well as friends and dining companions Pete and Pat. A debt of gratitude to the wonderful staff at Caregiving Services, Barbara, Ben and Judy, who were Doug's lifeline to the outside world, consistently exceeding expectations in caring for Doug like family, when family could not be present.
Doug is survived by daughter Dale Berger of Oak Park, MI, son, Stephen D. (Doug) Berger of Phoenix, AZ, and granddaughter, Courtney Webb of Houston, TX. He is also survived by 7 nieces and 3 nephews. Doug was preceded in death by brother. Wilson Berger and wife, Hilda (Hink), brother Glenn Berger and wife, Mary Louise, brother-in-law John B. Isom, and wife, Margaret, brother-in-law, Morris P. Isom, and wife Patricia (Pat).
Doug's final resting place will be at Forsyth Memorial Park in his beloved hometown of Winston-Salem, NC , next to his parents, Charles Henry Berger and Marie Holder Berger Welborn, and wife, Rosalind. Rest in eternal peace, dearest Charles Douglas.
