He was born on March 22, 1930 in Guilford County to the late Offitt and Emma Smith. He was a devoted Christian and member of Crestwood Baptist Church in Winton Salem.
Charlie proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He served 3 years in the Philippines. He and a shipmate were honored and decorated for saving several others from an overturned aircraft in the water that was aflame. He was later honored by officials and President Truman.
In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his wife, Ollie Smith; only sister, Betty Baldwin; and brothers, Thomas E. Smith and James C. Smith.
He leaves behind a very near and dear friend, Carrol Knight of Walnut Cove, whom he loved very much. Also surviving are his daughter, Kitty (Steve) Hilton of Mocksville; son, Chris Smith of New York; and brother, Fred (Peggy) Smith of Randleman; 4 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 11th at 11am at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Charlie’s honor to Hospice of Randolph County.
