Dennis was born October 21, 1951, at Fort Shelby Hospital in Bristol, Virginia, the younger of two children to Wilfred McKelvy and Ruby Carolyn Sweatt Weir.
Dennis’ family moved to Winston-Salem when he was young. They lived on Gordon Drive in the Gordon Manor area. He received a Cradle Roll Certificate when his parents enrolled him in the Infant Department of New Philadelphia Moravian Church. He attended South Fork Baptist Church with his mother during the 1970’s and took care of his mother after his father’s death in 1965 until her passing in 1995.
Dennis attended South Fork Elementary School, followed by Southwest Junior High in Clemmons, and graduated from West Forsyth High School in 1969, where he was a member of the Vocational Industrial Club. After high school, he attended Forsyth Technical Institute (currently “Forsyth Tech”) and completed his studies in Automotive Tune Up in 1972. December 8, 1977, Dennis graduated from Winston-Salem Barber School with a certificate in Barbering and Barber Science.
Dennis worked as a “body man” at Modern Chevrolet for several years. He went on to work at Pfaff’s Auto Glass until his retirement. After he retired and could not sit still, he worked for Shaws Radon Testing and Mitigation until 2019 when his health began to decline because of cancer.
In his younger days, Dennis was into physical fitness during the 80’s and 90’s, belonging to several gyms during this span. He loved to travel with friends and to play golf.
“Do no harm” could have been Dennis’ mantra. He was a man of few words, but much self-control, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and peace.
Dennis was preceded in death by both his parents. He is survived by his sister, Barbara Klemas (husband, Philip) of Connecticut, and two nieces (Amanda and Alicia) who live in Chicago.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3 pm on December 7, 2024, at Trinity Methodist Church, 3819 Country Club Rd., Winston Salem, NC 27104. Following the service, his remains will be placed in the columbarium there.
