Mr. Booth was born January 27th, 1936, in Burlington, N.C. to the late William Charles Booth and Pauline A. Mercer Booth.
Sam grew up in Graham, N.C. After graduating from Graham High School, he attended the University of North Carolina for a year and then went to Washington DC where he was employed in the Identification Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This is where he met his late wife of 66 years, Patricia A. Smith, formerly of Hopedale, Ohio. Sam returned to the University of North Carolina in 1956, and married Pat the same year. She worked in Chapel Hill while he completed his education. Following graduation from UNC Business School with a BS degree in Business Administration and UNC Law School with a LLB degree, he returned to the FBI as a special agent and served, following training at Quantico, VA., in Indianapolis and South Bend Indiana, Pittsburg, PA. and Wheeling, West Virginia. He left the FBI after three years and was employed as a staff attorney in the Highway Division of the N.C. Attorney General’s office. That employment brought him to Winston Salem in 1963, to condemn an additional strip of land for the ramp from Robinhood Rd. onto Silas Creek Parkway. He and Parks Roberts lived in the same mobile home park in Chapel Hill while attending UNC and Parks was practicing law in Winston Salem and preparing to form a partnership with Leslie G. Frye and they asked Sam to join them. Following his arrival to Winston Salem, he practiced law for 57 years dealing mostly with real estate.
When Sam wasn’t practicing law, he enjoyed traveling with his friends, working with his hands, watching UNC sports, playing solitaire, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Surviving to cherish his memory is his daughter, Pamela B. Davis and her husband, Edward Davis of Raleigh, N.C.; son, Samuel M. Booth Jr. and wife, Roslyn P.
