Walter Douglas Vaughan, 79, passed away at the home of his daughter, Jennifer Ann (Vaughan) Gardner’s home in Winston-Salem, NC on March 27, 2018. He was born June 27, 1938 in Leander, KY to the late Walter Nolan and Alva Cynthia (Hackworth) Vaughan.
He served in the US Army and was stationed in Germany. In early 1958, Walter met his future wife, Ann (Shauger) Vaughan, during a church dinner held by Garfield Baptist Church, Milwaukee, WI for local servicemen.
Walter will be remembered for his mischievousness and the way his eyes lit up when he was trying to pull the wool over your eyes. He will also be remembered as a man who loved his family and worked hard for them.
He leaves behind his wife, Ann, of almost 60 years of marriage and four children: Walter Douglas Vaughan, Jr. and his wife, Rev. Amy (Rutledge) Vaughan, Steven Eric Vaughan and Kimberly (Carroll) Vaughan, Jennifer Ann (Vaughan) Gardner and her husband, Casey Gardner, and Mark Ethan Vaughan. Walter is survived by one brother, Roger Vaughan, and his three sisters, Daisey Elaine (Vaughan) Gregg, Judy Ann Vaughan, and Linda Sue (Vaughan) Clouse; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and friends. He was preceded in death by siblings, Willis Gene Vaughan, Louis Nolan Vaughan, and Wilma Jane (Vaughan) Croley.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, March 31st at 2pm at Reynolda Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem, NC. The family will receive friends for a visitation at 1pm. The family invites all to come celebrate Walter’s life. Private burial to follow at a later date.
