Vance J. Underwood, 91 years old of Winter Garden, FL went to his heavenly home on Saturday, October 10, 2020. Vance was born in Harlan County, KY on October 20, 1928. His parents were the late Van Buren and Mary Underwood.
He retired from Raines Bros. Construction Company in Chattanooga, TN where he was a superintendent. Vance build commercial buildings in Chattanooga, Knoxville, TN and Atlanta, GA. He served his beloved country in the Korean War in the 235 Observation Corp.
Vance loved his God first, family second, and then his country. Serving as a deacon at Red Bank Baptist Church in Chattanooga, TN, he also coached girls’ basketball and began playing volleyball.
In 2000, the Underwoods moved to Louisville to be closer to their daughter and her family. Soon Vance became a member of Southeast Christian Church, and again became a volunteer, which was a pattern in his life. He coached children’s basketball and volleyball. He also began a high school girls’ volleyball team in the church. Vance together with his son delivered church papers for South East Christian Church for 10 years; they made 84 stops each week spreading the gospel.
During his time in Chattanooga, he played on the city senior volleyball team. The team won state and competed 2 years in the Senior Olympics, going to San Antonio and Baton Rouge. In 2019, the family moved to Orlando, FL where they attended Lifebridge Church.
Vance is preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Bobbie Underwood.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Ella Jo Underwood; son, Joe Underwood; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Reburn (Scott Reburn); and grandchildren, Abby Reburn, Alex Reburn, Katherine Reburn, Claire Reburn and Jack Reburn. He is also survived by his brother, Jerry Underwood, and several nieces and nephews. Vance’s grandchildren were one of the reasons for his long life. He lived for his family.
