I just heard the news of Bill's passing. I have known you since 2001 when I moved in next door at just 21 years old. I was scared, owning my own home and being a mom. I soon found comfort knowing that I had wonderful neighbors who kept an eye on things. Later, when my world fell apart upon giving birth to my 1lb baby in my home, you were both there. Giving your words of faith and encouragement in my darkest of days. I will never be able to thank you both for being so incredibly kind to me and being there when no one else knew exactly how I felt or what to say.  The world will surely be missing Bill. I remember one trip to the jetty when you tried teaching me to ride a bike without training wheels that was so funny. From the first time I met all of you, 25 or more years ago,  you and Bill made me feel like part of the family right away.  I will always remember the great vacations we took together, family get togethers and events, and always there was Bill doing whatever needed to be done or just making sure my drink wasn't empty.  I will always remember him for his great sense of humor, even if he was just arguing with your dad to get him riled up.  Mostly though, I will remember Bill for the great family man he was. How dedicated he was to the two of you and how much he loved you both.  You were his whole life and it was obvious he wouldn't have it any other way. I'll remember him as the loving uncle he was to Sydney (dit-ney) and Samantha and how much he was there for all  of us.  I'll remember him playing with Sydney out in the hall, keeping her entertained while her baby sister was being born in the next room.  I'll also remember him dropping me to my knees with that shoulder grip he loved to get me with when I least expected it. We loved Bill so much and he is going to be so terribly missed, but he will never ever be forgotten.

  The ocean is a unique wonder of the world. At times, the soft crashing of the waves helps us to rest and feel at ease. At other times, those same waves can cause destruction and uncertainty in our lives. Please know that the rough waters that you are now experiencing will one day become calm again and it will be then that you will be able to reflect on not only the wonders of the ocean, but on the wonderful times you shared with Bill and family on those shores.  May you find peace and comfort from God, family, and friends in the coming days. Bill touched lives that you weren't aware of and he will be missed by all who knew him.

Bill was a very special person, a friend to anyone that met him. He will always be in our hearts and in our thoughts. We will miss him dearly. May god be with you in this time of need .

Bill was not only my brother in law , he was my big brother. I was only around 10 yrs old when he and my sister Susan were married and I went everywhere with them growing up. We used to go to the drag races in Bithlo and NS Speedway together and I remember riding in Bill's Chevy Nova II that he raced. He introduced me to muscle cars and would always help me and Brian with ours when we were older. He taught me how to hunt and shoot and I remember Quail hunting and riding horses on his families farm. He gave me my first Ben Pearson bow when I was about 12yrs old and taught me how to use it, I still have it to this day and will always cherish the memories we had together. You were such an inspiration to me and my family and friends growing up Bill and you were always there to help. I will miss your smile and happy personality, and the way you were always joking around and dropping me to my knees with your vulcan grip on my shoulder. We miss you very much Bill, but you will always be in our hearts and memories. We Love You!!!

Bill, You are a very special person to us! Anyone that could keep my sis and father in line is a miracle! Ha ha! We had soooo many special times in the Keys! Our kids practically grew up there! Jimmy Buffet , hot tub, fishing and boating. The best times ever! Will be forever talking to you! Love always!!!

Billy is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Susan; his daughter Amy Ruiz and her husband Jimmy; his brother Charles “Shorty” Byrd and by his grandchildren Jimmy Ruiz and David Ruiz.

He was preceded in death by his son, Nicholas Byrd.
