At 96, Papa had lived a lot of life. He was born in the Philippines, and lived there during the Japanese occupation of WW2, hiding in caves with his family. He was able to emigrate to the US via a special congressional exemption, as his father (Mark’s grandfather) was a guerilla fighter for the US during the war, and received a commission into the United States Army after World War 2. Papa met and married the love of his life, Vera, in New York City and moved his young family to Florida. When Disney opened, Papa was an inaugural employee…he worked at the Polynesian hotel until he retired.
Papa’s legacy lives on in the lives of his family. His three boys, Mark, Fred Jr., and Mike, also display the same work ethic and determination that Papa exhibited throughout his life. Although Mrs. Salva died far too soon, Papa kept going, doing the best he could without his life partner.
What an incredible life Papa led. From the struggles of hiding in caves during the Japanese occupation to the wonder of working at Walt Disney World—it’s a story of resilience, perseverance, and adventure. His legacy is one built on strength, family, and dedication. It’s clear that his impact on the people he loved will never fade. While the grief of his passing is felt deeply, there is also so much gratitude for the life he lived and the family he raised.
Papa is survived by sons Mark (Julie), Fred Jr. (Kristina), and Michael (Diana). He is also survived by Isabella and Marco's mother Angela Alban. He is also the proud grandfather of Ashley, Matt (Jackie), Brandon, Freddie, Isabella, and Marco.
