Born on July 5, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, Jean was the daughter of Fred Leroy Clemens and Tess Clemens. Raised in a home that valued learning and compassion, Jean carried those principles with her throughout her life. She shared a close bond with her sister, Pat Cherkas, who preceded her in death.
Jean married the love of her life, George E. Karres, on August 5, 1950. Their marriage spanned 65 years, marked by deep devotion, shared purpose, and unwavering support. Together, they built a vibrant family and a home filled with warmth, laughter, and enduring love.
Jean’s passion for education was lifelong and profound. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree and two Master’s Degrees from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida—a remarkable achievement that reflected her intellectual curiosity and commitment to growth. She dedicated over 20 years to teaching both elementary and middle school students, shaping young minds with patience, creativity, and care. Her students remember her as a steady, encouraging presence who believed in their potential and inspired them to reach it.
A proud resident of Winter Park for 65 years, Jean was deeply rooted in her community. She was a longtime member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Oviedo, Florida, where she found spiritual nourishment and lasting friendships. Her faith guided her life, and her service to others was quiet but profound.
Jean and George raised six children, each of whom carries forward her legacy of love and integrity: George (Carol), Patty (Craig), Tom (Denise), Fred (Lisa), Mary (George), and Beth (Jamie). She was the proud grandmother of 21 grandchildren and the delighted great-grandmother of 32 great-grandchildren. Her family was her greatest joy, and she poured her heart into every birthday card, holiday gathering, and quiet moment of connection.
In her retirement years, Jean embraced her love of travel with enthusiasm and wonder. She and George explored the world together on international trips and cruises, creating cherished memories across continents. She also shared these adventures with her grandchildren, passing on her curiosity and love for discovery to the next generation.
Jean was known for her handwritten letters, her warm and welcoming home, and her gentle wisdom. She had a gift for making others feel seen and cherished, whether through a thoughtful note, a warm smile, or a quiet moment of listening. Her presence brought comfort and calm, and her legacy is one of love lived fully and shared generously.
