To tell of all the kindnesses and wonderful things my mom did for me in my life would of course take too much time for this service. I think of the times that I was sick and mom cried and cared for me, saying she wished it was her and not me. I think of the countless times her and dad baby sat our kids. I think of the times that I was about to do something foolish and she firmly stepped in and stopped me. I think of how she guided me into my current career with a gentle suggestion "why don't you take a computer class"?
Like my dad, mom came out of from a generation that had character that don't see much of today. I believe that character in part came out of how they were raised, and the times they grew up in. Their beliefs were simple, but were the bedrock of what makes a person, a family, or even a society successful. They believed in hard work. They believed in commitment to family and country. They believed in treating all people fairly. They believed that money and material things were to be earned, and once earned, used wisely. They believed in separating truth from lies and letting you know when they thought you were wrong.
My mom was a great example of how to live life and raise a family.

Joyce Franklin

A lady of Grace, Integrity, Honesty, Compassion and Discipline.

Our mother was a true Southern Lady.  She was the youngest of four girls. She grew up in the hardest time of our nation's history, the Depression.  As a child, she learned to be frugal, honest, to stand up for others and share what meager resources they had with those even less fortunate than her family.  Raised on a farm, she learned to feed the animals, help with household chores and study hard in school.

As she grew she learned that education and integrity were extremely important.  She always received the highest grades and was Valedictorian of her high-school class. A beautiful young woman, she was also crowned Homecoming Queen and Spring May Queen. She was active in team basketball as well.

After graduation, she went to the big city of Columbia SC, staying at a boarding house for young ladies, where, one evening she was asked if she would be date for the cousin of one of her roommates. She said she would and met Alonzo Franklin. Alonzo would later tell his children that when she came down the staircase, he stood up and felt a bolt of lightening go through his body and he said to himself, I'm going to have to marry that girl.

Al and Joyce built a home in Columbia and had four children, the second of which died at birth. Mom loved children and despite the heartache of losing her second child, she told the doctor she wanted to have another baby right away.  The doctor said, Well, then go home and get busy!

In 1969 Al's work transferred him to Central Florida and they bought a little house in Winter Park for just $16,000.  When the youngest of the children entered school, Mom decided she needed to go back to work, or she was going to go nuts! So she took a position as secretary to the Bank President, William Gossett.  In subsequent years, Mom would transfer to other banks as Mr. Gossett's assistant, then Comptroller, and finally Senior Vice President of Liberty National Bank. Her strong sense of business, integrity and banking regulations helped her steer these banks into strong financial standing.

Joyce retired in 2003 at the ripe age of 74 . She said the only reason she quit was she was running out of computer passwords to use as she had used all the names of children, grandchildren and granddogs!

Her loving husband of 59  years passed away January 20, 2010 and she resided in this area until her death last week. We will miss her terribly, but know that we will see her again in Heaven.

The service for your Mother was serene and touching.  The words spoken by you, Brian and Carla were heart felt and clearly expressed your love and admiration for your Mom.  There are so many wonderful qualities that your Mom possessed that are evident in you.  I was always tickled by the southern wit and sayings that you heard from your Mom and passed along in our conversations.  She was a lovely, lively lady - as are you.  So grateful to call you my friend" - and so sorry for your loss.

Your mother blessed so many people with her faith and kindness. Praying that you'll find comfort in your memories of her and in the knowledge that others are missing her, too. Joyce made amazing  women Carla and Marti who I am proud to call my friends. God bless you girls in this difficult time.
