Arnold was born on January 1, 1938, on the family farm north of Grenfell, to Philip and Veronica (Strobel) Ortt. Arnold had a very happy childhood, growing up with four older siblings. He attended Gettel school, about a half a mile from their yard. His most honest complaint was that he had to go home for lunch and missed that exciting noon hour at school. Against his family’s wishes, at the age of 13, near the end of grade 9 in April of 1951, Arnold decided to stop going to school to be a farmer. He definitely never looked back. As a teenager he began learning to fix and discovered a love for welding which eventually led to fabricating of some farm equipment. Grain farming was his true passion.
In 1967, Arnold married Carolyn and they started their forever-life on the family farm. They included their three daughters in their passion for farm life and everyone enjoyed working on the land they loved. Arnold and Carolyn moved to Grenfell in 1995 but they remained invaluable partners with their youngest daughter, Lauren and her husband Ryan, for the next ten years.
Arnold was always ready to volunteer and to support community projects – the church, the skating rink and the pioneer home. He was instrumental in acquiring signatures in support of installing natural gas north of Grenfell. He enjoyed serving the RM of Wolseley as councilor for ten years. After moving into town he chose a hobby. Since he wasn’t allowed to have a welder in the basement, working with weathered lumber became a great pastime.
Arnold and Carolyn were well matched. Their faith in God, their work ethics and their idea of enjoying life were the exactly the same. They traveled a great deal. They read a lot. They danced!
Arnold is survived by his wife and true soulmate of 59 years, Carolyn; their three daughters: Colleen (Kevin) Lutz and their family: Josh (Lisa) Hollinger, Griffin and Grady, Chad (Breanne) Hollinger, Westyn and Brodie and Brett Lutz (Emily Nelson); Jennifer (Bruce) Loveridge and their family: Justine (Steven) Macdonald, Georgia and Olivia, Carter Loveridge (Aliyah Perras) and Jackson Loveridge; Lauren (Ryan) Maurer and their family: Cassandra (Deven) Andrews, Kash and Rhys, Danyka (Mathew) Scott and Charlotte, Levi Maurer and Mariah Maurer (Tyler Kraushaar).
