Brenda Lee Owatch passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Wednesday, October 22, 2025 in Indian Head Union Hospital, at the age of 61 years. Brenda was born on February 20, 1964 in Wolseley, Saskatchewan.
Brenda is survived by her husband and partner of 45 years Wilbert (Windy) Owatch; sons Chad (Brea) and Brenden; siblings: Mary (Randy), Darlene (Larry), Rachel (David), Tammy and Richard; special friends she loved like sisters: Theresa, Shawn, Diane and Sylvia; brothers-in-law Joe and Larron “Beast”, as well as special nieces: Andrea, Giselle and Kristen, along with many other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Brenda was predeceased by her mother Beverly (nee Fayant) (2015); father Gordon Worsley (1998); mother-in-law Velma (nee Eashappie) (2004); father-in-law Douglas Owatch (1992); baby sister Bonnie (1966); brother-in-law Dusty (1988); special friend Lynda Francis (2016); sister-in-law Freda Owatch (2018) and her nephews, who she loved like a son, Curtis Eashappie (2010) and Drew Jack (2025).
Brenda was a devoted daughter, mother, wife and friend. She worked for many years in the hospitality industry at several local establishments, including the restaurant and bar in Sintaluta. However, her true passion was working and serving daily breakfast, lunch and snacks to the students of the Nakoda Oyade Education Centre, where she had worked since 2004. Brenda began as the bookkeeper for the NOEC Nutrition Program and eventually, over time, worked her way up to become the program manager, successfully running it until she fell ill in the spring of 2025. Even in her sickness, her focus remained on the students, often asking about school and checking in to ensure everything was running smoothly. In her final weeks, she still longed to visit the school and see the kids and staff, it was where she invested her heart and time. Providing daily for the students was her true calling.
Brenda met the love of her life, her husband Windy, when she was just 15 years old. From that moment, their hearts were intertwined and together they grew from childhood sweethearts into lifelong partners. They were married on September 1, 1994 at Carry the Kettle, surrounded by family, friends and the beauty of the community they both cherished.
Throughout their 45 wonderful years together, Brenda and Windy built a life rooted in love, laughter and strength. Their bond was one of quiet understanding and unwavering support — a true partnership that weathered life’s storms and celebrated every joy. They raised two sons, Chad and Brenden, who were the pride and light of Brenda’s life. She also carried a precious angel baby, whose brief presence she held close in her heart forever.
Brenda devoted her life to her family, always putting others before herself. Her home was a place of warmth and welcome, where the coffee was always on and love was always felt. She had a heart that gave freely, a spirit that lifted others and a strength that carried her family through life’s most challenging moments.
Brenda was fortunate to share a special bond with her baby brother Richard. From the moment she became ill, Richard stayed by her side, helping to respond to her needs in any way he could. Even in her sickness, she looked out for him, making sure he ate and took care of himself. When she could no longer speak, Richard became her voice, always ensuring her opinions and wishes were honoured. Richard brought her peace and comfort during her final days.
Brenda will be remembered for her kindness, generosity and her ability to laugh and find humour in every situation. She loved teasing and cracking jokes. Those who knew Brenda knew she was always ready for three things: a laugh, a smoke and a cup of coffee.
Our family wishes to thank the incredible team at Indian Head Union Hospital and Dr. Bruce Zimmerman for the gentle care, unwavering support and endless compassion they provided Brenda and our entire family during this difficult time. We are eternally grateful for the love and light you brought into our lives.
The wake will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2025, in the Carry the Kettle Nakota Nation Community Centre, beginning at 4:00 p.m. The funeral service will take place on Monday, October 27, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the same location with Elder Clyde O'Watch officiating. The pallbearers will be Richard Worsley, David Noels, Kurtis Noels, Rylen Jack, Rylee Jack and Cary Runns.
