He will be lovingly remembered by Iris, his wife of 65 years; daughter Laurel (Wayne) Keller; son Mark (Karen); son-in-law Sean (Tanya) Adams; grandson Derek Adams; granddaughters Kayla (Tyler) Vargo, Kelsey (Drew) Czerwonka, Ashley (Jared) Schmidt, Courtney (Braden) Brule; 13 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Douglas was born on a farm near Broadview where he lived and farmed until 1985. Doug and Iris moved to their log home at the Resort Village of West End, Round Lake. He continued farming with his son, Mark, for several years.
During the winter he enjoyed travelling with Iris to several countries such as Cuba and Mexico. A favourite holiday for the whole family plus Grandma Hilma was to Sweden in 1976. He got to meet his aunts and many cousins. He also went to where his father was born before coming to Canada.
Doug loved to entertain, play cards, hunt moose and elk up north and fish. Jan Lake was the favorite for the whole family. Doug and Iris went there for 50 years. He also loved to curl which he did for many years until his back could not handle it. After that Iris and Doug spent many hours watching curling on TV or driving all over Saskatchewan watching it live.
He really loved to play crib. When his granddaughters were thinking about getting married their boyfriends had to pass the test of being able to play crib if they wanted into the family. He also enjoyed playing bridge once a week with friends when he moved back to Broadview.
His life was never simple, and he kept the family on edge with all his injuries. He broke both his feet, put his hand in the combine twice, welded his ring to the steel shop and broke both his hips, plus minor injuries. He was a loving, caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. May he rest in peace.
A celebration of life took place on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in the Broadview Community Centre with officiant Pastor Abe Driedger.
